LED Lenser 8407 P7 Torch
Advantages: Strong, powerful
I get a torch issued for my work and, well, its worse than poor. Made of plastic, runs off 4 AA batteries and is as basic as a torch can be. Wasn't long before it failed. Being plastic it does not like being dropped either.
A work colleague of mine showed me an LED Lenser torch and you would almost think you were hold some helicopter spot search light, it was that powerful. But the torch was only 5inchs long.
I did my research and considering I need to carry around a torch on a belt, I did not want anything massive. The P7 was an ideal size. I will be honest, I bought this blind. No idea really of the power, the distance, the colour etc. Really was going by the reviews of it.
I got it from ebay for just over £20 brand new. Bargain! It arrived in a nice presentation box. I opened it and immediately felt that this beast was fairly heavy (compared to my plastic torch), but then this product is made with aircraft aluminium. Very strong an durable. Its all aluminium with nothing rubber. So there is no rubber grip for the torch.
The 4 AAA batteries give power of over 130hrs before changing. However, I guess this depends on what setting you have it on. There are two settings, bright to see in the distance and dim for seeing infront of you.
You can adjust the head of the torch to give you a direction beam. So you can choose to have it direct small light beam shooting straight off into the distance (for finding people) or adjust it so that the light opens out until you have a large circle infront of you (good for looking for objects on the ground).
I have not dropped my torch yet so I cannot comment on the durability of it, but I really do not feel I have to worry to be honest. I see this being able to take anything.
It comes in a nice nylon pouch with a Velcro flap and can clip onto your belt.
Overall, I talk about this torch all the time. Would have no worries in it failing and certainly would recommend it. For the money, even if you want to use it as you take the dog for a walk, you really should. Cheap Wilko or Halfords torches will fail soon enough, especially if dropped. This will be with you all the time and will never let you down. Used by the US Army, enough said really.
Summary: A torch that should cost £100 but actually is well over half that.
