Advantages: Well made, nice and bright
Disadvantages: Not waterproof, expensive on batteries
Maglite have been known for a long time now for their reliability and build quality. I personally think this is mainly due to good marketing. Yes, their products are good, but let me explain why there are better options.
I purchased one of these 3D cell torches. It cost me just under £20. The torch feels solid and is well made. It does what a torch is meant to do and produces a nice bright beam. The batteries last OK, but being D sized cells, they do cost a bit to replace. Rechargeables are an option, but for torch use are not that great. There are no other features on offer here. Plus, it is not particularly waterproof. Showerproof yes, but heavy rain will not do it any good.
In comparison, I purchased a Fenix torch, that runs from two AA cells. It cost me £35 and is a lot more compact. It is waterproof too. The light beam can be adjusted high to low, can be focused nicely and also it has an SOS mode, where if I did get stuck in the forest it would flash for 60 hours. The light beam it produces, with no real scientific measurement, has to be at least three times as bright. The torch also feels better made. So in comparison to the Maglite, I would choose the Fenix torch every time.
Summary: The Fenix is a much better choice

- 12/04/09 Good review here, if short - would be handy to know the spread of the light in terms of general performance.
T aking into account that the Fenix and MagLite may be made of similar substances, the Fenix range is more of a tactical torch compared to MagLite which is more of a household torch. MagLites are not supposed to be completely waterproof however - they were made with water proof switches which in most household uses should cover the design aspect. A useful review to buyers but slightly misleading given that the Fenix you mention is better and in this respect seems to get more worded content than the info you have supplied here about the MagLite. |
