Advantages: Small, light and incredibly robust torch.
Disadvantages: There are stronger lights available.
It's the light produced by the torch when you need it.
And this Mini Maglite will not let you down.
This is a small torch. I have small hands and this one not only fits nicely into one palm it is also light enough that it does not put any pressure on my damaged wrist. It is so light, in fact, that when I did the night ascent part of trekking up Kilimanjaro I sewed two holders into my ear-warming fleece, clipped the Mini Mag to them, and it stayed in place on the side of my head and caused no problems. It stayed there - despite my lack of sewing talent - and never dragged my head over on a very grueling part of the trek. This was also a lot cleaper than buying a head-torch I would never have used again.
The beam that the Mini Mag produces is adjustable from wide-beam to spotlight just by twisting the head of the torch. The wide beam has shown me the way in jungles, high mountains and has never let me down. The spotlight is equally useful at home when hunting exactly where the thing that has dropped down between the sofa and the wall is and which bits of furniture will have to be shifted to retreive the errant object.
There are more powerful torches available. There are also specialist head-torches that don't require getting the sewing kit out. But many of them are a pain to feed with the right type of battery in many of the more remote parts of the world. The Mini Maglite takes two AAA batteries, which are easy to find even in these areas. These usually come with the torch but replacing them is just a matter of unscrewing the tail of the torch, taking the old ones out and popping the new ones in. All very easy even in hard conditions. The torch is also not greedy in eating its batteries. Mine has given me untold hours of service and only cost me a few batteries on top of the initial investment.
That was spent at the now gone YHA Shop in Covent Garden but these torches are available at all good surviving camping stores as well as online aorund the £10.83 to £14.14 depending on whether you want it boxed or wrapped in pastic. They come in a variety of colours. Mine is basic black, which has held up well and remains unscratched despite hard usage.
The torch is also anodised and has high grade O rings to make it water resistant. I confirmed that mine certainly is after being swept away caving in Thailand when the Mini Mag went for an unanticipated swim with me and once I'd got myself into somewhere I could stand up it still worked. It is sold as water and shock resistant and certainly proved itself to be that on that and other occasions and not only still works but has not gone even a little rusty.
You get a spare bulb in the tail of the torch, though mine remains in there as I am still on the original bulb, which is a great mark of build quality.
If you unscrew the top off the torch completely you can turn the torch into an electic candle by putting the end of the torch into the open part of the top of the torch. This will produce a light which is a lot less strong than the torch option but can make a nice touch in a high camp, especially on birthdays.
The torch comes with a removable clip, which works just as well to clip the torch to a belt as it did to my home adapted head-torchied ear warmer. This too continues to work well and without corroding. The silver clip on black torch also looks stylish.
Because the Mini Maglite is so small, it fits into my handbag for long drives as well as it does my trusty rucksac for long trips. It has been a great investment and one I can heartily recommend to others.
May be cross-posted to Ciao.
Summary: Tough, flexible and easy to feed mini torch which will not let you down.
