Advantages: Great value and quality
In my opinion, a torch is a household necessity in case of power cuts, so when we moved into our current house we decided to buy one as we didn't have one. We decided that we wanted one that was light and compact enough to carry around easily so that we could also use it when walking the dog in the winter, come the dark nights as we take him across to the park each evening which is not very well lit.
We ended up buying this Maglite mini torch as it was just what we wanted, it was cheap, compact and seemed perfect. We paid around £10 for ours and purchased it two years ago from a local homeware store, and the recommended retail price is around £20 which I do think is quite pricy however given the quality and durability of the torch I do think that it is worth the full price, and it has been worth every penny. It is in full working order and still looks great even after plenty of use over a considerable amount of time.
The torch comes boxed which makes it seem more expensive and I like that it comes boxed as it keeps it safe and secure, and it can't get lost! We keep it in one of the very cluttered kitchen drawers and it is nice to open the drawer and instantly see the box as we never have to faff around trying to find it. Included in the box was a spare bulb and some batteries. The torch itself is the perfect size and is compact enough to fit in a large pocket. It is not bulky or heavy, and is lightweight without feeling flimsy. It is comfortable to hold and easy to grip thanks to the raised texture on the middle of the torch, and as it is a slim torch I can wrap my hand around it easily so it never feels like I'm going to drop it.
It is surprisingly attractive for a torch - it's not boring and plain like most are, especially because the one we have is bright red with a nice shine to it, so it is a little bit more quirky and cute. There are also other colours available including blue, silver, camo print and black - they're all exactly the same in design etc just different colours. The torch is made from aluminium alloy and is very durable, I have dropped it a few times and there are no marks or dents on it. It is also waterproof and shockproof which are good features for a torch to have in my opinion.
Turning the torch on is simple as you just twist the head of it (the part with the bulb). The lack of on and off button doesn't bother me and I actually like it, as it means that while I'm holding it there's no way that I can accidentally turn it off. The beam of light can be altered easily to either a direct beam or wide beam, and I always use the wide beam. The light that the single bulb projects is really impressive given the size of it and the light is bright rather than dull. When walking my dog when it is really dark I find that even if he runs very far ahead, it is easy to spot him despite which beam the torch is on, and I am also able to see everything around me clearly when I shine the torch.
Whenever there's a power cut though the torch pretty much lights up the entire room enough to be able to see where things are and find candles and matches etc. The torch takes 2 x AA batteries which are quite cheap and easy to get hold of. These were included with the torch and lasted for around six months before we needed to change them, but as we purchased the torch just before winter and used it almost every night when walking the dog it is understandable that the batteries didn't last as long as I was expecting. The current batteries we have in it have been in there for around a year and a half now and the torch is still working, however we aren't used it as much as we did when we first got it. It doesn't drain batteries though which is good and overall it is a great little torch which I highly recommend.
Summary: Just what I wanted.
