Advantages: Great light emitter

Disadvantages: None as yet

Darkness. What does it bring? Fear, possibly pain. There are a lot of torches out there, but not many effective pocket sized ones. Many of the keyring versions emit only a glitter of light, useless when out camping in the middle of no where, or trying to find that pesky fuse box in the back room. Anyway, the American company Maglite have come up with the answer. A small, durable torch that fits on a keyring. Wow you may say, but the beam of light it emits for its size is quite extraordinary.

Made from machined aluminium it is a rugged piece of equipment, I've dropped mine many a time and nothing has happened to it. Not even a scratch. The handle has a knurled design making the tiny torch a bit easier to grip. The 'twist of a wrist' design for the on/off function is great. Not only does it turn on and off, but as you turn the top further, the floodlight turns to a spotlight. Handy when you want to look extra hard in that corner.

Being anodised inside and out makes sure corrosion is non-existent, and it is also water resistant. Another great feature is the shock resistance, I'm sure you've dropped your keys at least once in your life! The lamps are made to last and I truly believe the company is made to last.

Dimensions - 8cm long, 1.5cm diameter.

Price - Around £10

The maglite is available in many metallic colours ranging from red, blue, yellow, green etc. I have the blue colour - very cool :P

Maglites can be bought at many hardware stores, car accessory shops and I have also seen an increase in the amount of petrol stations which sell them. I purchased mine from Halfords.

A great product and good value for money. It's also worth having a look at the solitaires (uses 1 AAA battery) older brothers and sisters, the 2 cell, 3 cell, 4 cell and so on. Well done Maglite!

I am a big fan but would add the warning that if you are going to leave them as an emergency measure in the car for a long time the batteries tend to corrode and can prove impossible to extract - I've had at least one light destroyed in this way. Worth the extra expense as they can last and last if properly looked after.
