Advantages: Easy to use, inexpensive, allows you to turn lights on/off when you aren't even in..Magic!
Disadvantages: Might suddenly start making noises after a while
I own quite a few of these plug in timers, and I have been using them for a number of years now. They are extremely useful and have never let me down. This little device basically enables you to control various electrical appliances by switching them on and off at a time you have specified, when you are not present to do it yourself.
I have found them very handy particularly during the Summer, when my partner and I often go away for weekends on camping trips. We have a Tropical fish tank set up at home, and we can go and enjoy our time away safe in the knowledge that the fish will not be plunged into darkness throughout the duration of our trip. The timer can be trusted to turn the lights on in the morning, and off again at night. (The timer won't forget to complete this task, unlike certain family members!) So there is no need to hand our house keys over to family and burden them with the task of doing it either.
These timers are also useful for possibly deterring would-be thieves and prevent a home invasion while you are away from home on your jolly holiday! This is because you can plug a lamp into the device and set it to turn on at certain times and trick people into believing someone is at home when they aren't. This is a much quicker and easier way of psychologically outsmarting robbers than setting up a fake party scene using cardboard cutout people, or indeed using a blow up doll and some kind of pulley system like the kid used in the Home Alone films! We always make sure we leave a lamp or two set to switch on/off through the timers when we go away. It just gives you that little peace of mind.
The device is very simple to use. It is a 24 hour timer that allows you to choose when to have your electrical items turn on/off and for as long as you like in 15 minute increments. You first have to make sure that you rotate the dial in a clockwise direction, so that the current time is lined up with the little arrow. You will notice that the little black plastic pieces around the edge can be moved. Wherever they are pushed down, the appliance that you have plugged into the timer will be switched on, and wherever they remain up, your device will be switched off. However, you do also have the option to use the manual override switch. This is located on the side. When this switch is pushed upwards, the device will ignore the timer and instead continuously remain on. The little LED positioned on the front of the timer glows bright red whenever the appliance plugged into it is 'on' so that is quite a nice visual reference.
While these timers are not exactly gargantuan in size, they are a little on the chunky side. Once you have plugged the timer into the plug socket, and the electrical device into the timer, it does protrude from the wall quite a bit. This isn't really a problem for me though. You can pick these timers up quite cheap and I think they are fantastic value for money. I can't praise them enough! The only problems I have found with them is that if there is ever a power cut then the timer will obviously stop working, and when the power comes back on then the time is out. Also, when they are all shiny and new they are very quiet, almost silent! Then, after some time they suddenly become a bit noisy. They emit a mechanical sound that fills my head with an image of an angry robot! It can be a little irritating after a while. In fact I did consider giving this product 4 out 5 stars because of the noise, but because there are so many advantages to this product I think it would be a little mean of me to take a star away just for this. I've had my timers for quite some time now and they have served me well.
Summary: An inexpensive 24 hour mechanical timer with manual override
