Advantages: Good for shredding small amounts of documents.
Disadvantages: Hassle of turning the handle.
This is a personal shredder, designed to destroy confidential documents, and ideal for use in the home. The idea is to completely get rid of all information on paperwork like bank statements etc.
Anyone with small furry animals may think they can get pet bedding free of charge, but apparently shredded paper can give small animals paper cuts. This paper will be securely shredded, plus if you use it for a job like, packing away delicate ornaments etc. you will be recycling, so you can feel eco-friendly too.
The idea is a simple manually operated shredder, on a plastic "fish tank". you simply turn the handle, and feed it with paper. it can handle A4 paper, and I would suggest one sheet at a time. In case of a paper jam, you simply reverse direction of the handle.
The tiny machine does it's job, without being bulky. although small in size, it actually works, with no mess, no hassle, and no noise.
The RRP of mine was about five Pounds, and you may well see them for even less! As always, if buying online, allow for the cost of shipping.
These shredders will not shred CD's although some of them do! They are not designed to shred cardboard either.
The weight is virtually nothing, so is light enough to carry around, but being that light, you do need to hold it down with one hand.
I would just like to say, you really need to be careful nowadays, what with all the identity theft going on, you should destroy all documents with any details on. You do not need a shredder for this, you could burn them, this is just easier, electric ones even more so.
Summary: A good cheap alternative to electric ones.

- 25/10/08 The straight-cut shredders like this one are pretty useless security-wise though. Not a problem in our house fortunately with an open fire - everything goes up in smoke. |

- 21/10/08 not bad for a fiver but seems a long job if you have lots to shred. |

- 20/10/08 Nar is right, straight cut ones are not as secure. |
