I'm a HUGE Monty Python fan - have been since my dad first introduced me to it when I was around ten. Whilst my favourite film has to be 'The Meaning of Life', 'Life of Brian' the teams parody of the life of Jesus, is a very close second.
Those who have seen the film will probably be very familiar with the scenes featuring Pontius and his 'wevy good fwiend in Wome' Biggus Dickus, with their comedy speech impediments causing much merriment in the crowd. And it's Biggus Dickus whom this corkscrew is modelled on.
I have to say, it's a very good design. The detail is excellent, with the face bearing an accurate, though slightly cartoonish, representation of Graham Chapmans character. The armour is a rich burgundy red, with gold coloured detailing, end even the beard is well done, with individual hairs etched in. It looks like quite a lot of effort has gone into making this corkscrew as detailed as it could possibly be, and there is no sacrifice on quality either - no rough seams, no flaws from the moulding, and the twirly corkscrew 'Dickus' itself is firmly anchored in place.
The corkscrew does a fair job at opening bottles. Speaking honestly, I don't find it performs as smoothly or as quickly as the more traditional corkscrews, largely because is has neither arms, nor a lever, to make actually removing the cork once you've twirled the end in either. It does require strength and some tugging and pulling to remove the cork, and I have top say this design is a little too big and bulky to fit comfortably in the hand.
Nevertheless, I do think this is a nice little novelty gift - and it would make a lovely little stocking filler for Christmas . I paid about £8 for mine in a local novelty gift shop, but I have seen it on sale from £3.99 since, in a wide variety of shops, as well as online.
Overall, in terms of actual performance at the task for which it is designed, this corkscrew is average- possibly slightly below average in fact. However, I think the design, and the quality of the details, nudges my overall score for this corkscrew up to a respectable 4 Dooyoo stars.
I am, it must be said, a huge fan of Monty Python and am forever quoting them to families and friends and rewatching the episodes and films until my girlfriend psychically removes the control from my hand. Thus when it comes to give time people are always buying me products related to the franchise which is fantastic! One I have recently received is this corkscrew based on Pythons best film, Life of Brian.
This device is based on the amusingly named "Biggus Dickus" character from the film, one of the most memorable creations from the time. Its hand crafted, well made and solid with the attention to detail being stunning. As a stand alone figurine this would have been well worth the money alone but it also has a function! Its all around 10 inches put together and stands as a figurine alone, resting on top of my fridge, and the corkscrew eminanted from the bottom of the product. It "shoots up" and the packaging and instructions are full of Python esque jokes and innuendos. Bit of fun and always raises a chuckle. You can see from the image where the corkscrew is based, think of the characters name and the way to shoots out from between his legs and you have an idea of this being an innuendo in itself! Marvellous!
The corkscrew is a solid piece of kit too and just because this is a joke novelty item don't ignore the fact that it opens and uncorks wine bottles with ease and the stainless steel corkscrew doesn't half pack a punch.
It is all together a well made, funny and novel piece of kit that looks well in my kitchen and always works as a conversation starter and I have yet to see anyone not amused by it.
A perfect gift for Python fans and all round novelty but high performing corkscrew! Although do expect to pay upwards of £7.99 for this so make sure its going to be appreciated for its humor as well as its use.
~A quirky way to open your bottle of wine!~
There are some gadgets that are must have because they are very helpful in allowing you to complete tasks that would often be impossible without them. There are other gadgets that are simply made for the joy of giving everyone that receives them a little chuckle every time they use said gadget and this Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew falls happily into the second category. When wanting to review the Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew it sadly wasn't listed here on Dooyoo so a product suggestion (and a very tongue in cheek one I might add!) was made in order to allow me to share my thoughts about this silly yet hilarious Corkscrew.
For those who are likely to be offended by a product such as this Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew which has the actual bottle opening device situated rather dramatically I would suggest that you look away now! For those who still have their sense of humour fully intact and can see that the Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew is just a little light hearted fun, I say read on...If you dare!
~A corkscrew by name. Entertaining by nature~
The Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew was something that I came across in Debenhams before xmas amongst the gift items and stocking fillers that seemed to be placed all over the store to catch your eye. The Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew was set on a small Monty Python themed stand amongst an array of other silly items like a talking parrot, playing cards etc. After having a quick look though what was there I noticed the Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew and ended up in fits of laughter having seen it and read the blurb on the box that told a little about the products main features.
The Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew was very nicely boxed as it came in a gift box type of thing with a see through plastic window through which the Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew was visible. The Monty Python branding was quite full on and as soon as I saw the item I knew it would make a fun gift to place under the xmas tree. The character that the Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew is based on is from the Life of Brian film and it does rather suit the silly object and its purpose in a school play ground kind of way which did lead to plenty of giggles on xmas day when he was revealed to his new owner...........As Biggus Dickus the bottle opener and before you exclaim in horror and throw up your hands in disgust, I do recall that told you to walk away if you are squeamish!
~How to use a Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew~
Luckily the little or should I say well proportioned Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew wasn't going far and he now resides in the kitchen, where he makes himself handy opening bottles of wine etc whilst being both funny and entertaining at the same time. Biggus Dickus is dressed in a smart roman style outfit that befits someone of his rank and the blurb on the box says that he is 'great for screwing corks!' He stands at a full 8 inches in height and looks every inch the bottle opening genius that he is, as once the flip out corkscrew between his legs pops up into position he is raring to open wine bottles with just a little helping hand.
Biggus Dickus as a character is Pontious Pilots 'vewwy gweat fwiend in Wome' from the Life of Brian film so I thought he would be a fun gift along with some of the other items from the same range. In use he not only causes a giggle when he is seen for the first time by guests, he actually works well and it take no time at all to open a bottle of wine with this little gadget. At the time of buying the Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew I must say it was bought for fun and I wasn't all that bothered about whether it worked well or not, although I am happy to say that it the item is easy enough to use and seems to be made of very durable materials with a plasticy main body and a silver metal corkscrew.
~Rating and price~
I certainly feel that this Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew is a fun tongue in cheek gift for any Monty Python fan who will be able to see the funny side of the item more than someone who has never watched the film or is familiar with the type of humour used by the Monty Python gang. The Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew cannot be washed in the dishwasher and should be cleaned with a damp cloth instead. You should also make sure that you dry the corkscrew so that the metal part of this doesn't rust over.
Other than not being able to place the item in the dishawasher the Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew is very easy to use and care for and should provide many years of loyal service, as he seems to be made from durable materials. As the Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew was bought as a jokey gift I feel he has provides us with a few laughs and as such I want to give the product a 4 star rating. You can still buy the Monty Python Life of Brian Corkscrew from many on line outlets and prices seem to be close to the £9.99 that I paid.
