Advantages: No batteries, easy to work
Disadvantages: Short wrist strap
I have owned this penguin torch for a few years now it being a Christmas present from my husband. We had suffered a black out and found ourselves struggling to find a torch with batteries that worked so my husband liked the idea that this one would always work. I've got a soft spot for penguins so it is an ideal design for me.
How does it work?
This torch is dynamo powered and you operate this via the penguin's right wing. The left wing has 2 sliding switches, one turns the torch on and off and the other locks the right wing into the penguin's body or releases it to allow you to wind up the dynamo. Once you have got it working locking the wing back in makes it much easier to hold.
I thought when I first got it that you had to keep pressing the wing to keep the light on but you only need a small number of presses to have light for at least 20 minutes. The torch light is in the head of the penguin and it is about 1.5cm diameter. It has a nice bright bulb and although it isn't the most powerful of lights it always me to find candles and matches during a power cut.
This torch has a small wrist strap that is only really suitable for a child which is a shame as it is a great novelty torch for adults. The strap is fixed into the bottom of the penguin between it's feet.
As it doesn't need batteries this torch is very light and easy to hold if you were using it for any length of time.
Price and Availability
You can get this torch from retailers on Ebay and on Amazon, it is currently (November 2012) costs £4.99. I think this is a good price and it makes a great stocking filler.
Would I recommend?
Yes, if you want an environmentally friendly torch that will always work (as long as the bulb lasts!) then this is a great option.
Summary: A fun torch which doesn't need batteries
