Waking the dead!
Member Name: wigglylittleworm
Advantages: wakes me every morning
Disadvantages: not a gentle wake up call!
You could say I'm not a morning person. I've had a disrupted sleeping pattern for many years and my body is naturally more awake and alert during the middle of the night than at 7am! My night owl tendencies leave me shattered in the morning, so tired that I can set three alarms to go off at the same time and sleep through them all. This obviously causes problems in my life and I was sick of having to explain that I was late for things because I had overslept yet again.
I had tried all of the traditional kinds of alarm clocks as well as using the alarms on both my mobile and house phones. It was after speaking to my friend who has a deaf daughter that I decided to research alarm clocks for the deaf and came across the sonic bomb which sells for around £30.
The sonic bomb can be used as a traditional alarm clock which uses a noise to wake you up but it also has a vibrating buzzer which you place under the mattress to shake you awake and also flashing lights so that sight, hearing and touch are all covered.
The alarm is easy to set up, the digital display is pretty bright and the clock can be set in either 12 or 24 hour format. The clock takes one battery which acts as a back-up power source in the event of a power cut. There is a 9 minute snooze option but, believe me, you will be so thoroughly awake after the first alarm that you will not want to have the experience repeated a few minutes later!
The buzzer is around the size of the palm of my hand and is connected to the alarm by a detachable lead. I would have liked this lead to be a bit longer but at least if you trip over it then it detaches from the clock instead of being damaged or pulling the clock over. When I first tried the buzzer out on my hand I thought it could not possibly be strong enough to shake me awake but once it is placed under a mattress then the vibrations are really strong. I initially tried placing the buzzer under my pillow but having my brain shaken awake was not a pleasant sensation!
The audible alarm is no ordinary alarm as it can be set to a maximum of 115 decibels, to put that into context it is the same loudness level as a loud rock concert and almost as loud as a pneumatic drill! You do have the ability to change both the tone and volume of the alarm, the tone ranges from ear splittingly awful to slightly less unpleasant. It has never failed to wake me up; it is similar in tone and volume to my smoke alarm.
The flashing lights are a nice extra but I don't know if they would be bright enough on their own to wake me up, they add to the overall annoyingness of the alarm when it is going off making it all the more likely you will want to jump out of bed to put it off.
£30 might seem expensive for an alarm clock but it is worth every penny in my opinion. Anything which can rouse me from my slumber without fail is a godsend. The Sonic Bomb does not wake you up in a gentle manner but wakes you up violently so that you are instantaneously awake and there is no danger of me going back to sleep with the snooze option repeating the painful process 9 minutes later. I would recommend this alarm is worth trying for all deep sleepers as it is the only thing that has worked for me.
Summary: great for deep sleepers
