Advantages: Cheap, handy to have in hot weather, great is a larger room
Disadvantages: Even the lower setting is strong, not very portable
When I was pregnant last year, I went through a stage where I always seemed hot - I assume due to hormones and my temporary central heating growing inside! For that reason, I wanted a desk fan to use at work and home. I didn't want to spend too much as I'd never needed to use one regularly before being pregnant and knew afterwards it would just be something that got pulled out for the odd warm day.
This fan was perfect for my requirements - it was £9.99 in Tesco - the main attraction was the price as others I came across were more expensive. It comes with two settings so it can be set to the higher one if it's really warm or the lower one if you just need a burst of air. It has an oscillating feature that can be stopped by pulling a nozzle at the back and then it just blows air out in a straight line in whichever direction it's pointing. It runs off electricity and the cable isn't that long (I'd say around 1.5 metres) so you always need to make sure you're fairly near a socket to use it. It has 30kw of power and is a white and grey colour.
It comes boxed but needs building as the blades, cage and stand are all separate - this process is easy to complete though and I did it within a couple of minutes. When built, the fan part measures 9 inches in diameter - the whole thing measures around 30cm x 29cm x 16cm in total - I think it's quite bulky really considering it's description as a desk fan. It also is heavier than I expected, it weighs 1.5kg according to Tesco's website and I remember when carting it home from work it seemed weighty. It's easy to operate though - apart from the oscillating feature operated at the back, there are three buttons on the front that are pressed in according to the setting that you require (two settings for the fan and a stop button). It is basic, but ample for everyday short bursts of use as I originally needed it for.
The first thing I noticed when I used it at work was it's massive surge of cool air even on the lower setting. I could never use the oscillating setting on my desk because it always started to blow my paperwork about (not the professional look I was after!). I found I had to point it away from my face when on my desk so it was blowing slightly past me, rather than at me. It was just too much when blowing towards me and my hair was bobbing about all over the place.
At home, I now use the fan in a larger room and it sits further away from us than it was at work whenever it gets warm. I find in this case the lower setting and oscillating is fine on a hot day. The fan easily keeps the room nice and cool on that setting and circulates the air very well so that in a short space of time (under a minute) we start to notice a big difference and start to cool down. It's also fairly quiet and it's not distracting.
I rarely use the higher setting due to the lower one being so powerful anyway. The only time I've used the higher setting is whenever I've been walking for ages and return home tired and sweaty but often then I prefer to grab a shower straight away rather than sit down first. At least the option is there though if needed and I would assume it would be handy on that setting in a room of much larger scale on a hot day. It does get slightly louder on the higher setting, but still not really loud.
I would recommend this fan, I think it's good value although I wish it came with a third setting that was lower than the two available that blew the air more calmly so it was possible to have on the desk without things blowing about. The fan now lives at home rather than used at work. Considering it's advertised as a desk fan, I'm quite surprised that the lower setting is so strong. My desk isn't small - it's about the size of standard office ones out there so I would assume most people would have similar issues unless the desk was massive.
I rate this desk fan 3 stars in total - I think it's a good item although I've taken two off for it being advertised as a desk fan when I've not been able to use it that way and for it being quite bulky as it's not very portable.
Thanks for reading :o)
Summary: A good value item but wasn't great as a desk fan
