Tesco Go Cook Y Peeler
Advantages: Cheap, sturdy, works well
Tesco has a really great cooking department where you can find just about every kind of tool you need for your kitchen. When I first set up a home with my husband its here that we bought all the little things that you don't have and need for your kitchen such as cheese slicers, graters, and peelers. Its Tesco's I now go to when I need to update my utensil drawer and its here I bought this very cheap but very good Y peeler.
For me a peeler is an essential item in the kitchen. I like to cook with fresh vegetables and my little boys favourite vegetable at the moment is carrots I am forever peeling carrots. I also peel potatoes, butternut squash, fruits to be able to puree them for my little boy and this peeler works really well.
The peeler is just a long handled peeler and has the round blade at a verticle angle on the peeler so its up and down as opposed to peelers you can get where the blade is horizontal across the handle. I prefer this better this way as I think you can get a good grip on the peeler and peel the vegetables quickly and efficiently. The handle on the peeler is quite short but big enough for you to be able to wrap your whole hand around it so you get a good grip on it and can attack your vegetables well. There is also a black plastic grip on it which makes holding it easier and means your hand does not slip when you are peeling the vegetables. The rest of the peeler is made of metal so its very sturdy and hard wearing. I find this particularly useful when I am peeling butternut squash which I do for soups and puree for my little boy. These are really quite hard to peel and very hard when they are not cooked and the angle of them means they are awkward but this peeler does a really good job on them.
The actual peeler head is fairly large and wide so you get a good amount of skin off in each peel and it doesn't take too long to do each vegetable. The blade has kept sharp for years as I have never had to sharpen it or replace it. The peeler costs just £3.27 which is an absolute bargain in my opinion and a peeler I cannot see myself replacing for a very long time yet as it works so well.
