Tesco Go Cook Y Peeler
Advantages: Good grip
Disadvantages: Takes ages on large potatoes!
I try to avoid peeling veg at all costs as I find it a bit boring but sometimes it can't be avoided and as we eat mainly vegetarian food (I don't like meat) vegetables are a must in our household. I do like having a browse at the supermarket, anything that distracts from the main job of piling food in to the trolley hey! My previous peeler was OK at its job but had gone a bit rusty in the drawer so I picked this up during the weekly shop just before Christmas and threw away the old peeler.
The purchase decision
The big handle on the peeler appealed to me as I have quite large hands (for a lady!) and often fumble with wet veg when peeling. It was also stainless steel so I thought it might not rust when left in the drawer between uses. I also like the end of the peeler for digging out any eyes in the potatos if they have gone a little bit manky.
The main thing I peel are potatoes, carrots and parsnips and the odd apple for my daughter when I can't be bothered to munch the peel off for her. I find it easy to grip and nice and sharp for peeling the skin of the veg off without wasting too much of the vegetables. It is definitely safer than using a sharp knife thanks to the safety part near the blade so it is a better idea to use this than a knife on its own. I even use the peeler when not peeling; using the pokey tool on the end to rid myself of any eyes in the potatoes when we are cooking them as jacket spuds. Washing the tool is easy, I tend to hand wash the peeler with a bristle brush and it doesn't take much scrubbing.
This peeler costs £3.65 which is probably at the top end of what I am prepared to pay for a vegetable peeler!
I do think this peeler looks a lot nicer than my previous peeler which was all plastic with a metal blade. The handle makes it easy to hold and you can get a proper purchase on the vegetable you are peeling. The round shape of potatoes was more difficult to peel with this peeler than the long and thin veg like carrots but that may be true of any style peeler.
I use this peeler two to three times per week and have had no problem with it so far. I do prefer it to look at more than my old plastic one but I hope that over time the blade doesn't become less sharp and make peeling the veg hard work. This is in no way a speciality item but the long and thin shape suits my large hands and makes quite light work of peeling the vegetables. If you are looking for a new peeler I am happy to recommend this one, and will probably buy a similar style when this one comes to the end of its life.
Summary: A good peeler
