mmmm.... I'm a little confused, I own the 'Y' shaped Tesco Peeler but the picture shown above is the Tesco Go Cook Swivel peeler, as the review is titled 'Y' shaped peeler that's what I shall review!!!!
I bought this instore a couple of years ago, it cost around 3 or 4 quid- abit more than I would normally pay for a peeler. A quick look on their website shows them selling at the current price of £3.
The 'Y' Shaped Peeler is so called because unsurprisingly it's in the shape of a Y. The peeler handle is roughly 6 inches long with a 'v' shaped head- the curved blade sitting across the top of the 'v' held in place with sort of hinges either side thus making the blade move with the shape of the veg. The peeler is light in weight.
It's made from stainless steel and has a coated handle. According to the Tesco website the peeler is battery free, suitable for the dishwasher and -obviously- not microwave safe. The whole thing is good quality and sturdy feeling, it's comfortable to hold and easy to clean.
I peel things almost daily, with 6 of us in the house that's a lot of potatoes, and the blade is still sharp. I find it easy to use as the hinged blade glides over the uneven shapes of the veg/ fruit. The blade size takes a nice one inch or so wide strip of skin off making quick work of peeling- a chore which I hate. The veg/ fruit skin comes off nice and thin making minimal food waste. I find 'Y' shaped peelers alot quicker to use than traditional peelers (as the one pictured above) or knives- so again a plus for me as I hate peeling. Also being clumsy I'm glad of the design, my fingers are well away from the blade.
Pulling out potato eyes is something I do during the chopping up stage with a sharp knife so I don't miss the sharp pointed end of some swivel peelers.
I would recommend this peeler and wouldn't hesitate to buy the same one again.
Summary: Works as well as it did when I first bought it!!
