Tesco Go Cook Y Peeler
Advantages: Easy to use, durable
Disadvantages: Swivel head is a bit off-putting/scary at first!
I cook most of mine and my family's meals form scratch and I like to include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables in our diets so a vegetable peeler is an absolute must-have for me. I have actually got two vegetable peelers - one which I was given by my Mum but never use as it's so flimsy feeling, and this one from Tesco which I use all the time.
This peeler is part of Tesco's own brand 'Go Cook' range and I've had this for around a year now and I've never had any problems with it at all. I paid around £3 for it and it is currently retailing at £4 which personally I think is still a fairly reasonable price. It might seem slightly expensive for a peeler compared to some of the other brands around however it is sturdy and durable and it has proven to be worth the money.
The peeler is fairly basic and minimal in design, and it reminds me a bit of a disposable shaving razor shape wise. It has got a black plastic handle which is easy to hold and grip, and it doesn't feel flimsy at all. The handle has got a hollow rounded part at the end so to save space it can be hung up, however I store mine in my utensil sorter in my top drawer and it doesn't take up much room. At first I stored it in my second drawer down in my kitchen however as it's so sharp I found my self having to be really careful each time I reached in so I moved it to the utensil sorter as I thought this would be much safer.
The blade part of the peeler needs to be held at a certain angle to be effective - in an up and down motion. The blade was extremely sharp at first but after a while it has become blunter and it isn't as sharp so it can take a little longer to peel the vegetables, but it's still quicker than my other peeler. As the metal blade has a swivel head, the peeler did scare me a little at first as I was worried I could cut my self if I held it at the wrong angle, however I soon got used to it and I've never had any injuries from using this!
I use this mainly to peel roasting potatoes for when I make homemade chips/roast potatoes etc which is fairly often and I have found it to be a lot quicker than the other peeler that I have as the blade part has a larger surface area, and I like that because it is fairly sharp even now that it has become blunter after so much use I don't have to apply very much pressure so my hand never hurts afterwards.
Saying that though, I have also used it on sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes have got a tougher skin than normal roasting potatoes and I used to really struggle to peel them, but this slices through the skin reasonably easily however unlike with normal baking potatoes I do have to apply a little more pressure. I have to put a bit of effort in when peeling vegetables with tough skin, but this peeler does it in a fraction of the time that it would take with my other peeler.
Though it does cope fine with sweet potatoes and a few other vegetables with tough skin, when it comes to things like swede, pumpkin, butternut squash etc it doesn't cope anywhere near as well and the angle can be awkward with strange shaped veggies like butternut squash, so I tend to use a knife for these kinds of vegetables else it takes too long and can get frustrating. I have also used this to peel apples for my homemade apple crumbles and apple pies and a fair few other fruits and vegetables.
My partner uses this sometimes too whenever he cooks, and he hasn't mentioned anything bad about it, and he never seems to struggle with it. Cleaning the peeler doesn't take very long at all as there are no little nooks and crannies, I just wash the blade area under a running tap which does the job and it is dishwasher safe. All in all this is a good peeler. It's by no means completely flawless but I do recommend it and I am going to give it 4 out of 5 stars.
Summary: Not perfect but good enough for me.
