The Pampered Chef Crinkle Cutter
Advantages: Makes fruit and vegetables look nice
Disadvantages: None for me
When my fiancé mark and I bought our first home together a crinkle cutter was not on my list of essentials. I eventually got one because Mark thinks crinkle chips taste nicer than straight,, how I don't know. Same potatoes, same oil just different shape. Personally I don't get it but I bought one to try anyway.
I got my Pampered Chef Crinkle Cutter from The Pampered Chef website. At £11.00 I thought it was expensive and to be honest as I don't make chips that often I really thought it would be a waste of money but I have been pleasantly surprised . I have had so much more use from this than I ever thought.
You are advised to wash the cutter before use but really that's just common sense. In my case that's a bowl of soapy water but the cutter is dishwasher proof.
The Pampered Chef crinkle cutter has a nice curved handle that makes using it very easy, its got a nice grip in the centre of it. The handle is D shaped and attached to each end of it you have the blade. The blade is approximately 6 to 7 inches in length and is slightly curved. It is of course shaped in a tight curvy pattern to give your food that crinkle cut. Despite cutting through fruit and vegetables with ease the blade doesn't feel as sharp as I expected it would, I was slightly surprised about this. However it does come with a protective cover to slip over the blade when not in use as it is sharp enough to cause injury if you grabbed it accidentally when its laying in a drawer.
I use my crinkle cutter on a wooden board, it does mark it slightly but the instructions advise not to use with a glass or marble cutting board so I just keep a wooden one in the cupboard for this.
I've used my crinkle cutter for chips and it does do a good job of giving a nice crinkle edge. It can be difficult to get all the chips the same size but I'm not that chefy so therefore not bothered.
I have also used it a lot for vegetables, far more than I thought I would. Although it doesn't improve the flavour of the food it does make it look nice on the plate, especially when I've got friends or family round. By cutting the veggies with this just makes a simple stir fry look more pretty on the plate.
We don't have children but often have our niece and nephew over. Recently they stayed overnight, I was immediately informed that they didn't like carrots and definitely no fruit! I didn't say anything but when it cam to dinner I had done some carrots with my crinkle cutter. Their faces were a picture, and I'm pleased to say all the carrots were eaten. It was the same with fruit. I chopped a banana up with the cutter and they happily ate it. So another bonus to this little gadget is it does tend (or did in my case) to encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables.
The crinkle cutter can be used for salads, cheese and bread. I've never used it on bread but may be once again this could be used to encourage children. It can also be use to chop up herbs, not that they will look crinkly but its just an easy little gadget to use for that particular job.
The curved blade makes cutting and chopping very easy. Of course softer things are going to cut easier than potatoes etc but I haven't found using it difficult. I should add that if you have problems with your hands this may not suit your needs. My mum has arthritis and she wouldn't be able to use it.
Over all I recommend this little cutting tool, it may be a bit expensive but I have found it to be good quality and more useful than I was expecting.
Summary: A nice little kitchen gadget
