“ Type: Food Chopper „
Regular readers of my reviews will know that I am a something of a gadet freak and I really do enjoy collecting and trying out new ones. One of our favourite brands is the Pampered Chef range which are ever so good but ever so expensive at the same time. However, the have always been of very good quality and have always lasted us a long time and therefore what we consider to be excellent value for money.
One of the latest gadgets we bought recently was the Pampered Chef Food Chopper. We paid £22.99 for this gadget (I think there was a discount off of a couple of pounds so we got it slightly cheaper). It is small, compact and fairly lightweight and made from strong and sturdy durable and hardwearing plastic with a little grey soft spot on the very top of the handle where you press it down to do your chopping action.
It is about 19cm in height (not exact as I have not taken a tape measure to it) and approximately seven to eight centimeters wide, I would hazzard a guess. It is easy to use and does not take up a lot of space in out gadget cupboard.
We use the Pampered Chef Food Chopper on an almost daily basis . We like to prepare, make and cook our own food from scratch in our house with basic fresh ingredients (a lot of which we grow ourselves in our garden) and we use the Pampered Chef Food Chopper to chop a wide variety of food stuffs from nuts, to vegetables, to herbs etc etc. It is simple and so easy to use and you just simply put your herbs (for example) into the little barrel-like bit at the bottom and press down on the soft grey spot of the handle quickly and with a certain amount of force, though not too much and it immediately releases the (extremely sharp little blades) and chops your herbs for you.
As you go to chop again you will not realise it unless you actually look very carefully to see how this chopper works, you will see that the blades have actually moved around so that the next time the blades come down (and the time after that), they are actually in a different place slightly so that this ensures that your herbs (or whatever you are chopping) and being chopped finely and evenly and not in the same place every time.
It is such a quick and effective way of chopping all sorts of stuff and once you have used it once or twice you will wonder how on earth you ever lived without it. Washing it is a bit more tricky I think, though it is meant to be made easier for you because the appliance splits three ways to enable you to clean it properly and it is dishwasher safe. We have not actually washed ours in the dishwasher, preferring to wash gadgets like these by hand in hot soapy water and leaving out to drain and dry naturally.
All in all a fantastic little useful tool to have in the kitchen and really recommended by us both.
I thoguht this was great when I bought it but then after a few uses the lugs that hold the clear plastic cylinder on broke. I sent it back and it was replced under the guarantee. Great until the same thing happened. This itme I left it a while and then sent it back again (this was at my postal expense remember). Got a 3rd one.
Well guess one - this also broke in the same manner. Again left it a while by which time when I finally got around to doing something about it I was told I couldn't as the guarantee counts from the original purchase date and is nothing to do with the age of the product I had. What a rip off! I cannot believe they get away with selling this item for so much with this clear design fault. Pampered Chef claimed they hadn't had others complain of this defect but I later met someone who'd bought the same thing and it had broken in exactly the same manner!
Steer clear of this or get down to Lakeland or HomeSense and buy a much cheaper (and hopefully more robust) version.
I was so excited to receive my Pampered Chef Food Chopper after having ordered it from the recent party I had been to. The price is steep in my opinion but I put it to the back of my mind thinking about the time it would save me. My husband is not a vegetable fan and I find myself spending endless hours chopping veg to within an inch of their lives so he wont find them in the cooking! Anyway, I thought this food chopper was the answer to my prayers...how wrong I was. The PC Consultant had demonstrated this gadget making a big issue of the fact you can let out your daily stresses on it and slam down the chopper as hard as you like and it wont damage it. Admittedly, the item does look and feel very sturdy. So on first usage I was pretty vigorous (but not psychotic) chopping my veg until I noticed that not only had it been chopping the veg, but also slicing shreds of the plastic container into my food!!! Needless to say I was back onto the Consultant (who was highly unsympathetic, but that's not a story for here) for a refund. I have since found out that another friend had exactly the same experience with this product and sought a refund also. Not a product I would recommend.
Pampered Chef offer some fantastic looking products but they are certainly not cheap. They are available on the internet or through home parties. After hosting a party I was able to select a couple of product at a discounted rate and I immediately opted for the Food Chopper. It was a handy looking gadget that I had been coveting for a while. Would this little gem live up to my expectations?
The Chopper is reasonably compact in design; it stands less than 20cm high and is about 8cm across at its widest point. This is great because it fits neatly in a cupboard without taking the excessive space that a food processor occupies. I did used to have a food processor but I never used it so gave it away.
It is predominantly white with a grey soft-feel top to the handle. This is ergonomically designed to be comfortable with repeated use and also to provide maximum results from your efforts. Each time you press the handle down the incredibly shape blades are forced out of the body of the gadget to chop your food. As you release the handle and depress it again the blades rotate so you are never chopping in exactly the same spot. This produces amazingly quick, finely chopped ingredients. You can see how your chopping is progressing because the sides of the bottom part of the chopper are clear.
I usually used the chopper on a board as I was often producing large amounts of ingredients. However it comes with its own flat rubber cap which acts as a mini chopping surface. This is particularly useful for small ingredients like herbs and nuts and it means that you don't have to dirty a whole chopping board for a tiny amount.
The chopping can be as fine as you wish, all vegetables can be made really tiny so that you can hide all the healthy ingredients in sauces and soups and your family may never know! My husband hates lumps of onion and this cuts it small enough that he doesn't complain. I have not found any fruit or vegetable that has not been successfully cut up with the chopper however some ingredients will need to be cut into suitable sixed chunks so that they fit inside the chopping barrel.
The chopping action requires a reasonable amount of force but after a few tries it is remarkably easy to manage to chop things very quickly and easily and it is also a great way of releasing inner tension! I found that I could produce huge batches of vegetables without my hand becoming at all sore.
After using the gadget it will require washing. This is very simple as it comes apart into three separate sections. The clear barrel is released by a quick twist, the blade cover is then slipped off and the main body of the chopper opens out to allow easy washing. The blades really are exceptionally sharp so care does need to be taken when both washing and reassembling. The reassembling is also straightforward and only takes a couple of seconds but you need to be particularly careful of the blades at this point. The product does say it is dishwasher safe however although the main body of the chopper and the blade cover stood up to dishwashing well the clear barrel section did not. It scratched quickly and eventually became so brittle that the screw-in plastic part at the top broke and the chopper was no longer useable.
My chopper probably lasted about 5 years which is probably good for a gadget that I used most days although at the price I would have expected it to be more durable so I am disappointed that I no longer have it and I am loathe to spend another £24.99 to replace it.
I now have to just cut everything up with a knofe and I certainly miss the speed of the chopper!
When I went to my first Pampered Chef party, I was more than a little sceptical about the wonder chopper (complete with hand gesture!) that my friend raved about.
However, the demonstrator really sold this to me! A compact piece of kit, it is a pump actioned, multi bladed chopper that allows you to chop finely any vegetable, herb, cooked meat, cheese, pretty much anything!
It comes in 3 pieces - the main body with a zigzagged blade which is exceedingly sharp. This has an unfoldable cuff that protects fingers from the blades. As well as this there is a see through strong plastic collar that allows you to see how it is cutting, and protects you from the strong smells (onions!)and flying pieces, and the whole piece of kit is rounded off with a silicone lid, that allows you to move around the kitchen with the whole thing as a unit.
Fantastic for family cooking - do you have problems getting your children eating vegetables? Look no further, this wonderful toy allows you to get the veg really small and easy to hide in sauces and meat etc.
Also, if your making burgers or meatballs or some such, with the food chopper you can chop up the onions needed really small, also without having to worry about cooking them seperately. It also protects your hands and nose from the often strong smells of garlic, or onions.
As you can tell, I love my chopper, and would strongly recommend it for most kitchens.
The downside, I guess it is, like most Pampered Chef products fairly expensive, although along with this it comes with a really good guarantee. Also, not that easy to get hold of directly, 2 options really - the website, or through a party.
****Edited to add the following:
Following requests in my comments let me add that the chopper costs £25 on the website, but if you host a party and enough gets sold this can be a lot cheaper, or even free - my rep told me that they give away more than they sell.
And also - washing up!
In order to wash this product you take the 3 pieces apart and wash in hot water, now, you shouldn't try and go near it with a cloth, the best thing to do is to rinse it under scalding hot water, but it can go on the top shelf of the dishwasher.
I hope this answers the questions?
I love this product. It is however a little bit of a pain to clean if you have been chopping something messy like tomatoes or onion but on the whole if you rinse it immediately after use most of the gunk can be washed off, then a short was in warm soapy water and it's clean again.
The chopper is essentially a device that houses a zig zag of very sharp blades inside the main body. When you push the plunger on the top of the device down, it pushes the baldes through and it chops the vegetable underneath them. The plunger automatically pops back up so you can keep pushing down to chop finer and thinner. As you chop it also automatically moves the blades around so it chops different areas, meaning the food will getting thinner and thinner the more times you chop.
There is a clear circular guard around the gadget which allows the food to stay in one place and be chopped instead of all splaying out over the chopping board. When not in use there is a thick rubber cover that fits over the plastic guard to prevent the blades being exposed.
The area to chop is not massive and therefore you have to chop small sections of food at a time which is a pain but not frustrating enough to chop by hand as my knife skills are non-existent.
I would say it would chop half an onion, three medium mushrooms, one tomato or several garlic cloves at any one time.
The blades are extremely sharp though so you do have to be very careful when handling it, and there is no way kids should be using it.
The price? Well it's Pampered Chef so it is a little on the high side but it was worth every penny I paid which was actually £24.50. However it is strong and durable and Pampered Chef have a five year no quibble guarentee so you can't ask for more really.
I love my chopper!
Durable blades that makes chopping quick and easy for meal preparation.
