Advantages: Safety, and saves money

Disadvantages: The lid isn't perfect seel

If like me your a commuter, in my case its between Sheffield and Manchester rather than buying the aweful coffee on the train its far better in terms of taste and economy to make your own, however, to do that you need a thermos flask or travel mug.

I've been using a Thermos travel mug for the last two years, the mug is made by Thermos the most famous vaccuum flask. Thermos was invented by James Dewar in the later years of the eighteenth century and set up his Thermos company in 1904, they have been making there iconic flasks since then.

The mugs are simplistic in their design but a classic in their look, they are characterised by stainless steel exterior, a black table rim made of plastic and a black rubber like plastic for the rim. The principles of vaccuum flasks are very simple, basically the mug has a thin layer of vaccuum between the contents and the surface of the mug, as we all know nothing can pass through a vaccuum so the contents of the inner space has nowhere to send its energy through heat and therefore keeps hotter for much longer. In theory if the flask was a perfect closed system then the material would stay forever at the same temperature but the screw cap top is where the heat will slowly go.

Anyway back to the mug, the mug holds a costa medium coffee sized cup amount, it has a lid with a little clip which means you can drink the coffee whilst walking without the worry of sloshing the drink all over your hand. I'd say on a winters day, the water stays hot for about 2 hours, on a hot day the drink stays cold for about 4 hours.

The mugs usually come with the larger flasks as a duo with the bigger flask and sets you back about £15, but when you consider the amount of money I've saved drinking my own coffee compared to station bought drinks, the saving must be huge!!

Its also good for a stag do filled with coffee and brandy for a white water rafting day out!! The boys enjoyed having that after two hours doing the rapids near Avimore.

The only downside is that the cups top isn't a perfect seal so remember to empty your mug thoroughly before storing it in a bag.

Summary: I love my thermos
