USB Mug Warmer
Advantages: Does keep drinks warmer for longer. Easy to use. No installation.
Disadvantages: Hot plate is too small.
My partner bought me a USB mug warmer, partly as a joke and partly as something practical as very often my tea and coffee ends up being not drunk because I forget to drink it. He bought it from www.iwantoneofthose.com (generally known as WOOT) and it was delivered 2 days after ordering it online. The USB mug warmer cost £7.99 which is not a bad price for a gift, whether for yourself or for someone else.
Unlike other USB mug warmers I have seen, this mug warmer does not include a cup, but instead just includes a base which heats so that you can plug your own cup onto the warmer - which I prefer as I hate drinking from a metal cup as it reminds me of camping! The warming base consists of a square base, which is 12cm x 12cm x 2 cm and so it is small enough to fit in your handbag to take to work should you so desire - and it's fairly lightweight also. Within this base there is a circular hot plate which is the part that warms up and it's this disc part where I place my cup. Attacted to the square base is a cable with a USB plug which can then be attached to the USB port on a computer / laptop in order to power the device. The cable is about half a metre long and so it can be kept far enough away from your keypad in case of accidental spills.
Using the mug warmer is easy. It's simply a matter of plugging it into to the USB port on your computer as no installation is needed. It heats up within about 2 - 3 minutes. The hot plate does get hot and the surrounding square base remains only slightly warm and so there is no change of burning yourself on the edge. I have found that it does keep my drinks hotter for longer - and I would estimate a cup of coffee hot for about 20 minutes - which is considerably longer than without the USB warmer. My biggest complaint with the WOOT model is that the hot plate just isn't big enough. I've had to take a smaller mug to work so that they mug fits on the base, but for the majority of mugs then the base is just too small - and this is a major design flaw that could be easily overcome by the manufacturers.
I've had this device for about three months now and so far it is still working as good as new. Having said that, this device does feel a little flimsy and so I'm not sure it is truly built to last for a long period of time
Overall, while this works, I'm not sure I would recommend it as long as this has such a small hot plate. I think it needs to be about a third bigger and then it would be much better.
Summary: Needs a larger hot plate for most mugs.
