Vacu Vin Pineapple Slicer
Advantages: Quite simple to use, gives me pineapple rings, easy to clean.
Disadvantages: Can take some getting used to, lots of mess, doesn't always reach the bottom.
In the last year or two I have changed my lifestyle drastically and look and feel better for it. I have been able to lose weight and become fitter by increasing my intake of fruit & vegetables and exercising more often. I like to have fresh fruit where possible when I am eating it for breakfast or as a 'treat' and so I have several kitchen gadgets that help to make my life more simple one of which is this pineapple slicer. I paid just under £6 for my slicer sold from Amazon including free delivery.
My sole reason for wanting this is that a lot of effort goes in to preparing a fresh pineapple and yet they are frequently tempting me with their special offers in supermarkets.
My initial concern when opening the packaging was that this looks quite flimsy. It is made of plastic hence the flimsy appearance and it looks a little like those corkscrews that are long winded to use. It has a handle lined with black and at the bottom of the slicer there is the round cutter. To use it is fairly simple really, I just cut off the top of the pineapple, the part with those large leaves, then insert the round cutter in to the pineapple to make sure your pineapple slices are rings. Then the top needs twisting and gradually it will start to make rings of pineapple appear out of the centre of the pineapple. Once about halfway through I tip up the pineapple and drain the juice in to a large bowl (just easier than using a glass). Then I can continue to make the pineapple slices although quite a lot of strength is required. When I have finished and reached the bottom of the pineapple I hold the pineapple with one hand and pull out the slicer with the other hand. There are two buttons on the side of the slicer that remove the handle (to remove your pineapple rings while still intact) so care needs to be taken on my part not to remove the handle before I've finished removing it from the pineapple.
Now this might not sound like the most simple thing ever, it isn't, but I do feel that it is quite simple to use. It does take quite a bit of strength and a few minutes but it gives me good results. Usually when preparing a pineapple I have all horrible uneven chunks that are sometimes large and difficult to chew up with a sore jaw (which I suffer from after an operation). I also like that if I take care that I can get a nice amount of juice from this, when I often add with other fruit juices to make a delicious drink, and I can also keep the pineapple outer shell intact and use this to serve cocktails (test it over a sink though first!) or even fancy retro looking desserts.
Since purchasing this slicer I have spotted that there is a similar one with three different cutters, I would definitely recommend this as with my one I have to go for a medium sized pineapple and can't always take advantage of the largest pineapple for my money. This is only a small annoyance but the difference in price between the two gadgets is very small for the option of additional cutters.
I am going to rate this 3 out of 5. I feel that this is a little flawed as sometimes it is difficult to get to the bottom of the pineapple successfully. There is a fair amount of mess when using this as I always end up using this gadget and a bowl to drain the juice to ensure that it doesn't spill everywhere and get wasted. I do love having the rings of pineapple though and the fresh juice not being wasted also. I am strong enough to use this, mainly thanks to using my Shake weight regularly but don't feel that older people or those with little arm strength would be able to use this anywhere near as easily as I can. I love using whole pineapples though as I can keep them for a few days before deciding that I want pineapple and having it there ready in a few minutes. I will definitely continue to use this, despite the problems I've mentioned, because I like to use gadgets regularly or they end up getting given away to make space for some other gadget that I just absolutely must have!
Summary: An average vacu-vin pineapple slicer!
