Yolky Egg Separator
Advantages: good design
Disadvantages: can fall if placed on a light bowl
In one of my earlier reviews I mentioned how I tried to get into baking last year and buying cookbooks/making cakes. I managed to come across someone selling on Ebay two cooking books and some small cooking gadgets with it. Although the books were seperate and the listing was done more as a job lot I managed to get some handy items that I wouldn't of bought myself.
One of the things is this. This is an 'eggcelent' *ahem* egg seperator known as yolky.
Yolky is pretty cute to look at!.. He is made of plastic and has little feet so he can stand, but a good thing about him is that he can also be put against the bowl you are placing him over so you do not have to hold him whilst you are seperating your egg.
There can be an issue with it at times, for instance I found you can't use him on a plastic bowl as the bowl is too light and he falls over. Now an egg seperator isn't something I would purchase, I find you can just get rid of the egg white by rotating it between the cracked shells.. however I now have a few different egg seperators lying around the house - more than I need!.. as I keep finding them being sold as part of a collection of stuff... for instance I bought a cake making set from The Works (bit of a random place to find it) but it also had a egg seperator inside it (although not as cute as this one!)
Using this is pretty straightforward, you can just crack the egg into it and there are two gaps inside yolky to seperate the white and keep hold of the yolk.
I'm not sure if it's dishwasher safe as it didn't come in any packaging but it's quick and easy to wash by hand.
Yolky would be great to get kids interested in cooking due to his friendly cartoony/cute appearance.
I could not find a price for this online in pounds, but the amazon.com site is showing it as $5.
Overall it's a 'cracking good' item :P
But one I only used a few times, then the novelty wore off and I didn't bother digging it out from the kitchen draws and just got rid of the whites using the egg shell.
I still give it 5 stars as it can be useful and is well-designed.
Thanks for reading :)
