Okay, so any serious DJ hoping to spin some tracks in the biggest clubs aren't likely to be purchasing a Hercules DJ Control MP3 unit... but for the rest of us, that want to show off some skills to our friends and have an enormous amount of fun need look no further!
It has 2 decks to load an MP3 on each, play one whilst preparing the other.
A fader, to gently fade tracks into each other, or even mix the two together.
2 jog wheels, to practice those fancy scratching techniques.
One thing I found this lacked, is a belt. Most 'real' turntables have belts which keep the record spinning in time after you have scratched it/spun it round. With the Hercules MP3 controller you need to be accurate in where you stop the jog wheel to ensure the track continues playing in time.
There are 6 EQ filters (3 per deck) which allow you to change the treble, medium and bass.
The thing that I find great about this piece of kit, is that it (somehow) is easily used on a number of different Laptop/Computer based DJ software. I use VirtualDJ (which is what comes with it in the box) and it surprisingly stays heavily in sync. There are some red and green lights on the unit itself, which show how well you can beat match (it also has an auto-beat-match function).
The Software itself is actually, very good (for any amateur wanting to have fun) you can pre-program a number of different scratches, which come into play at a touch of a button. You can also program special effects, meaning your limited skills can sound endless!
VirualDJ shows a library of all your music (which you can rate and set as favourite) along the side of the screen, you can make playlists in each deck and have a whole load of fun.
Of course, this is no professional unit.... but for less than £100 it can make a perfect Christmas present to those young or old music enthusiasts who will have hours of fun creating beats and mixing music.
