      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Gives a pilot the best flying control next to a saitek joystick, rudder and joystick combo

The best joystick i have seen used to date. The throttles is positioned in the most ideal place where the thumb can manipulate it easily. You will be surprised to see that no other joystick manufacturer does this. More often than not they are positioned in places where you have to completely remove your hand to adjust it or clumsily use your other palm. There oare trim buttons (for electric trimming). The joystick is nicely weighted so it stays reasonably sturdy unless you are flying a fighter combat mission which requires some unbelievabe unrealistic flying manoevers. Downside? You will not get more that 24 months of use. I have had 4 of them and bang on target they started misbehaving.

br> I have been looking to replace my joystick, ever since my Thrustmaster F16 replica finally bit the dust. I wanted to get a quality controller, but I couldn't afford to stretch my budget to accomodate force feedback. It was after a little investigating that I stumbled upon Logitech's excellent Wingman Extreme Digital 3D. >Overview and Value for money< --------------------------------------- The Wingman Extreme Digital 3D is no doubt Logitech's mainstream joystick. It offers a good balance of functionality/comfort at a reasonable price. The joystick does not have force feedback, which adds a sense of vibrational realism to your games - but at this price it is to be expected. As far as I remember the joystick typically retails around £25-30. I feel that this is a very reasonable price, given the quality of this controller... >First Impressions< ----------------------- Opening up Logitech's unneccesarily large box (waste of tree, imho) reveals the joystick itself (which is sleek and stylish), the software CD, documentation, and the cable converter (explained later). The documentation is well presented and easy to understand. However, I don't feel that Logitech were given a very difficult task in writing instructions for this controller - it is very simple to set up and use :) >Installation< ---------------- Installation of the joystick was easy. Simply install the Logitech software from the CD, and connect the controller. Windows will do the detection for you. The joystick has a standard gameport/MIDI connector for plugging into your soundcard etc... but as mentioned earlier there is a convertor included - this allows you to connect the device to a spare USB port, which many will find preferable. Once you have the software installed, and the device connected and recognised, you can then proceed to set up your controller. You will need to calibrate the
joystick (so that its motions are recognised correctly), but this is very easy to do by following the on-screen instructions. Next port of call is the excellent Logitech Gaming Software. You can get the latest version from their site http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm?page=downloads/software&CRID=1787&contentid= 5300&countryid=18&languageid=1 and this will work with any Logitech gaming controllers you have on your system (I own a rumblepad, also reviewed here on dooyoo). The software allows you to set up custom profiles for your games, which are launched automatically - this saves time reconfiguring the various axes/buttons for your different applications. >Features< ------------- The joystick is fully featured and offers an impressive array of buttons and axes for gaming. The unit itself looks great in Black, and is reassuringly sturdy. The controls are as follows: Standard X + Y axes (Up / Down) Z Axis / rudder control (Twist the controller left and right) Throttle Trigger + Four extra buttons on top of the stick 8-way POV (point-of-view) hat on top of the stick Two more buttons on the base. This gives you a total of 7 fire buttons, an 8-way POV hat (for looking around your cockpit etc), 3 assignable axes, and a throttle. More than enough for any game :) >Performance and Ergonomics< ------------------------------------- In various game tests, this controller performed flawlessly. Even under extended use, this joystick is very comfortable. All the buttons are easily accessible, as is the POV hat, and the wrist support is well positioned. The controller offers just the right amount of resistance - too little would feel cheap, and too great a resistance would make the controller difficult to use and uncomforable. The unit itself feels satisfyingly sturdy, and is contoured to provide a good grip. Essential for intense dogfights :) In addition, the joys
tick offers a smooth action and is very accurate - great in Flight Sims or action games such as Star Wars : Starfighter and Crimson Skies. Although this device is designed primarily for flight sims/shooters, it functions well in other games that benefit from a smooth analogue control, such as racing games. Worth noting is the fact that this Joystick is quite large, and is designed for people with medium to large hands. This is ideal for me, however, but if you have small hands you may want to look at a Microsoft offering. >Overall< ----------- For those of you looking at the 'non-force-feedback' price bracket, and wanting something a little better than a cheapo joystick, then this controller is ideal. An excellent array of control options, easy installation and connectivity, and great ergonomics make this a great buy. All this at a very reasonable price. I am very impressed with this Joystick, as I am with my rumblepad. In fact, Logitech have impressed me so much that I ordered their Cordless Desktop MX today (soon to be reviewed on dooyoo!) Highly recommended. Dave :)
