Wii know which Games console we prefer (and I'll give you a clue...it's not Nintendo!)
Member Name: sparkymarky1973
Advantages: Stomps all over the Wii!
Disadvantages: Bloody hard going! Certainly makes you break a sweat!
I wasn't too bothered about the Kinect add-on for XBOX 360. I still had unhappy, unfulfilled memories of Sony's EyeToy and a Nintendo Wii sitting under my Telly that has proved pretty much to be nothing more than an expensive dust-trap! My wife bought the Wii with all the usual good intentions of using Wii Fit (the single most popular reason why people buy the Wii) but has used it to my knowledge twice. I have a couple of games for it for my daughter but, to be honest, it doesn't really interest me as I prefer to play much more adult-orientated games of which the Wii has only a small selection. So why would I want a Kinect?
Then someone at work offered me his Kinect for £100 with two games. At the same time, my wife's best friend began talking about how she wished they still had her XBOX so that they could get Kinect and Kinectimals ~ a virtual pet game for the next generation. I began thinking that my daughter would like Kinectimals and started justifying to myself reasons to buy a Kinect. And then I saw the Kinect on Ebay for £70 with one game included. (Sadly NOT Kinectimals!)
A week later and I have throughly enjoyed my Kinect experiences so far!
The Kinect box sits either on top or below your telly and really isn't that big so you don't need lots of room to stand it. It sits on a mount and moves itself up and down to find the best position to find you! But because it uses your whole body as the controller for the games, you WILL need a large living room, bedroom or game area in which to play! Many of the Kinects being sold on Ebay are because people have bought them and don't have enough space to play!!!
The Kinect plugs into a socket on the front of your Xbox 360 though if you have an older console, (like me) then you will need a separate adaptor and power source that comes together on one handy lead. Setting up does not take long and, once it is done with the basics, then you can set it up for face and voice recognition. That said, I have had a few niggles with the voice recognition but appparently I am not alone and I really am not too bothered with that.
The game selection available is the usual mix that ranges from bloomin' great to truly awful. So far, I have only extensively played Kinect Adventures but you can download something called Kinect Labs for free that features lots of other fun but rather naff things to do that includes making a virtual buddy, Kinecting yourself into a realistic (sort of) facsimilie of yourself and putting Googly Eyes on an object of your choice and making a little showcase for it!
I do not want to go into Kinect Adventures too much but I have found it to be lots of fun! It doesn't take long to get used to being the controller yourself and is miles more fun than the Wii games I have played if not every bit as energetic!! With video chat available and lots more games coming out with every month that passes (you can now do Zumba on the Kinect as well as having access to the usual Dance-Off games that always come out with such Consoles and a while slew of Keep Fit games that aim to emulate Wii Fit) including an adult survival-horror game, Rise Of Nightmares, the Kinect really is a worthwhile buy!
I am dead pleased with my purchase and am so glad I bought it! It is waaay ahead of the competition and better than anything similar I have played before! Believe the hype ~ this truly is just as good as you might have heard and I cannot wait for more games to be available! If nothing else, it is a good way of earning more Achievments and getting your Gamer Score up but don't think you won't have to work at it! Every Kinect session so far has left me breaking a sweat and my only concern is that the Kinect at times seems a bit too much like hard work to be a totally satisfying gaming experience. That said, playing this enough could well see the pounds pile off!
Summary: An excellent gaming experience comes to Xbox 360!
