I must say this first people, before buying a kinect make sure you get the right version for yourself.
If you have a old xbox 360 (i.e the one without the internal wireless card and has smooth curves rather than the smaller more angular slim version) make sure you buy the version that comes with a power supply unit (PSU), as the older xbox 360 does not have the necessary port that could supply enough charge to both activate the device and communicate with it. I only say this because if you get the one with a PSU it'll cost about £5 - £10 more than the non PSU version, however if you try and get the PSU on its own you'll be looking at closer towards the £30 margin.
Ok on with the review, now to use the kinect on your device you'll need to update your xbox's firmware to the latest version (unless you have the slim unit in which case you can just plug it in) to do this you can either update your xbox 360 via the internet or better yet just put in a kinect only game disc and update via the disc (this is both safer and faster than the internet option), once you've updated the firmware you'll be invited to setup the kinect, make sure that you do not move the kinect while its doing this and make sure the location you put the kinect is secure as you do not want it falling.
The kinect can detect not only detect the motions you give but also the distance thanks to the dual cameras, this not only means that you can play at a distance from the TV (actually you need to be at least 2 feet from the sensor which makes screen glare and eye damage much less than sitting right in front of the TV), now considering most tech and gadgets that doing anything remotely close to what the kinect does is costs much more than the kinect's RRP.
Thou the kinect is a very impressive piece of kit , at the end of the day it is at the end of the day a gadget, the motion controls and voice detection (yes it has this also) impressive thou it seems does have one flaw, that is the room you need to use the device, you need to have space enough to use the device two feet from the sensor and four feet span to allow side to side movement.
Even thou I owned the kinect for some time now I've not got that many games for it, the only game I current play that could use the kinect is Fourza 4 and even then I've not yet tried the kinect controls, however for the kinect exclusive Dance central (yes I do look like a tool when I play this) it does make the game very fun, and it also open doors for more casual gamers or younger gamers.
Summary: Great piece of kit, need to make sure you buy right version
