Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller
Advantages: Build Quality, Identical to the controller you get with your system
Disadvantages: Price may be off-putting to some
In a previous review I recommended that a charging station with rechargeable batteries be bought as the relatively low cost they retail for would save money on purchasing replacement batteries in the future at the same time of buying the charger I was also on the look-out for a second controller as, rather sneakily, Microsoft only include 1 controller with the Xbox itself meaning co-operative game play was out of the question.
Looking on-line I was amazed at how much the controllers sold for imagining, naively, perhaps that they would be around £10.00 - £15.00, instead they were retailing from anywhere from £25.00 upwards and had an RRP of over £40.00. As Amazon offer free delivery and are generally reliable when it comes to getting orders right and delivering quickly I ended up buying one from there at just under £25.00 and although I baulked at the cost I have to say that it is a purchase I have not regretted.
The official Microsoft branded Xbox 360 wireless controller is, for all intents and purposes, identical to the controller which came with my Xbox. The only difference between the two that I can see is that the underside of my second controller is grey in colour and not all-black. It weighs the same at 454 grams and comes complete with 2 batteries (which I didn't need thanks to my charging unit) the buttons and directional pads are in the same place (so no need to describe them here) and when in use it sits comfortably in my hands.
The ergonomical design of these controllers is such that your fingers become used to the button locations and game play becomes instinctive, it is relatively heavy but in a reassuring way especially as it is designed to be held in both hands and does not become cumbersome even after a mammoth game-playing session. The wireless controller has a range of 30 feet which should give ample length and means you don't have to be sat on top of your television or stuck in one position whilst playing, I find that I can move from my sofa and to my desk if I want to whilst playing a game and the benefit of this is that I never get tangled up in any wires and pose no potential tipping hazards to other people (or dog!) in the room in which I am playing.
Years ago I remember buying a replacement controller for my Playstation and was disappointed with the quality, it felt badly made and I could tell it wasn't as sturdy as my original controller even though it was a 'proper' branded replacement. I hoped that this was not going to be the same with Microsoft and happily my fears were unfounded as other than the difference in colour I would be hard-pressed to tell each of my Xbox controllers apart. If you are an existing Xbox 360 owner and are looking for a second (or third, fourth etc) controller then I would have absolutely no qualms in recommending this at all.
Overall then even though I thought this was an expensive purchase it has opened up new possibilities when playing some of my Xbox games. Although I generally prefer to play by myself there are some games where a second pair of hands come in handy and the fact that I can purchase 2 player games if I want to means that for me this has been a welcome purchase. The other benefit as well of course is that should my batteries become low in one controller I know that I can put it back on its recharging cradle and synch the second controller to my Xbox allowing me to continue playing.
Chances are if you already own a Xbox 360 then you will have already bought another controller, if however you are a parent who has bought a gaming system for their child this Christmas and are looking for a second wireless controller then you can be assured of the quality of these and it's on that basis that I would award a perfect, 5 star rating.
Looking online for the purpose of this review I have noticed that the price I paid seems to be the going rate for an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller and you can expect to pay £24.97 from Amazon if you purchase this today. Definitely recommended by me if you want/need another controller, thanks for reading my review.
