Nintendo Wii Nunchuk Controller
Advantages: Enhances your gaming pleasure
Disadvantages: Still needs a wire to be connected to the Wii Remote Controller
If you've got a Nintendo Wii Games Console, you'll have a Wii Remote Controller which is that marvellous wireless controller that gives you so much more freedom to play the Wii games - no cables in the way, and you can be across the other side of the room and still interact with the game wirelessly.
To enhance your Wii gaming experience even further, this Wii Nunchuk controller is the second element of that Wii control system that you will need in order to play some of the games. One Nunchuk comes bundled with the Wii Games Console, along with one Wii Remote Controller. But if you are intending to expand the capabilities of the Wii Console by having 2 or more players, as well as the additional Wii Remote Controller (at about £27 each), you'll also need to get an additional Nunchuck controller (at about £12 each) for each of the remotes. And since you need a Remote in order to operate the Nunchuk, it can start to get quite expensive for those choosing multi-player options.
The main idea is that you hold the Wii Remote in one hand (either left or right depending on which handed you are), whilst holding the Nunchuk in your other, so that when you play the Wii Games that utilise the Nunchuk, each controller will independently track the motion in 3 dimensions of the hand holding it. For the Nunchuk (as with the Remote) this is achieved via the internal motion sensors.
The Nunchuk I have is a sort of shiny white plastic, although they now do them in black to match the newer consoles. The top has a joystick button which you can control with your thumb and there are 2 further buttons on the front edge of the controller which you can control with your forefinger. The control itself has a slightly curved shape and sits comfortably in your hand.
The Nunchuk itself doesn't have its own power source and hence, it needs to be connected to the Wii Remote via a small cable in order to utilise the battery power from the Remote, where the cable simply plugs into the bottom of the Remote. Personally I think this cable connection is unfortunate because the whole concept of the Wii was that it was wireless, and hence opened up a whole new gaming concept. And now you have to have a wired connection between the 2 controllers. OK, it is still wireless in a way, but I do find that wire link between the 2 a little annoying when you do take part in some of the more adventurous games. Why didn't they just make the Nunchuk wireless as well?
Control and movement translation to the on screen character is fairly precise, and I've not really had any issues with it. However, not all games require the use of the Nunchuk, and of those that do, some games use the controller in different ways - maybe a sword in one, a bow in another, or just the hand that does a punch in the boxing game. So it can take some time to master what it does in which game.
In summary, the Nunchuk is a useful addition to your gaming experience on the Wii and does open up that new level of gaming enjoyment. However, that little link cable between the 2 controllers does annoy me and is an unfortunate inclusion given that the Wii was marketed as a fully wireless games system. It's almost as if the Nunchuk was an afterthought addition to the Wii Console. In addition, to go multi-player you need to buy separate controllers again, where each requires a Wii Remote to power it.
So overall, whilst the Nunchuk is good, it could be better, especially if it was totally wireless.
Summary: Good, but could be so much better if it was wireless.
