I love the House of The Dead games. I have liked it since I was younger and had the game on the Sega Dreamcast. I was pleased when it was brought out on the Wii and was orginally playing the game with the Wii Zapper but was quite pleased to discover the House Of The Dead Overkill Hand Cannon which I paid just under £10 for on Amazon.
The Hand Cannon is an official piece of merchandise and comes in House of the Dead packaging. The cannon is compatible with both the Wii remote and the Nunchuk. The Cannon is styled on the guns which the characters in the game use though instead of looking exactly like a gun in colour, this gun is pure white so is still in keeping with the colour scheme of the official Wii products.
To use the Cannon is very simple and much like the Zapper. All you have to do press the little button which is on the side of the gun which will open the back so that you can slide your Wii remote in. It is very roomy inside and there is more than enough space for you to be able to plug the Nunchuk in. Once all is in place you just close the back up again and you are ready to go off shooting some zombies!
I love that instead of having to use the B button on the Wii remote to shoot that there is a realistic trigger which you pull instead. It makes the game very much more life like as well as giving you that little bit more satisfaction as you blow a zombie's head off! Also to reload there is no need to press the A button, all you have to do is give the gun a little flick and it will reload.
I found that the accuracy of the gun was very precise and I never missed a shot. It also reacted well and quickly. I never shot at a zombie and didn't have it recognised by the game as happens with some of the Wii guns. Be warned that this isn't the lightest of guns but the weight of it gives you that little bit more of a realistic feeling.
I much prefer the Cannon to the Wii Zapper. It feels more comfortable to hold, is easier to grip with its soft hand grip that allows you to play for absolutely hours without ever really feeling the pressure in your hand. I love how the Cannon really transported me back to the days of playing Arcada Sega House of the Dead in Hamley's when I was about 10.
Although the a necessity it is an absolute must buy and it is cheap too. What more can you ask for? This really is an excellent accessory for the Wii. Very pleased and my favourite Wii gun. It is also compatible with other shoot 'em up games.
Intended for use in conjunction with the popular Wii title House of The Dead: Overkill, the HOTD hand-cannon is a fairly passable Light Gun for the Wii, but really not that impressive.
First up, it does look pretty cool. Its a massive revolver thats definitely aesthetically pleasing, despite being in white, as most Wii acccessories are. The trigger is pretty heavy, and clicks happily when squeezed, making for a good realistic firing experience.
In spite of this, the experience isn't particularly authentic overall, given the fact that firing this behemoth of a handgun doesn't provide any kickback, obviously. It becomes a little hard to handle after extended play, since the light handle really doesn't accomodate for the sheer weight of the gun-barrel, and this leads to a handicapping targeting dip, although handgun purists would argue for the authenticity of this feature, I think its just down to bad design.
The remote slips quite firmly in, with no real worry about it being hurled across the room and shattering. Its pretty secure. You've got to thread the nunchuk through the gun if you want to use them both together, as most Light-Gun games demand, but this isn't nearly as irritating as it sounds and it never seems to come loose.
Surprisingly enough, it doesn't actually complement House of The Dead particularly well. Although it can be used with any Light-Gun game and any gun, its meant to be specifically designed for the HOTD: Hand-Cannon gun (figures,) unlockable after one playthrough. The in-game gun itself isn't really anything flash and doesn't really correlate well to the peripheral in terms of how it feels. This was a big disappointment.
Unfortunately, you can't use the House of The Dead: Hand-Cannon in conjunction with WiiMotion plus either, because there's just no room for it. Although the same can be said for the Nyko Perfect Shot, (see my review below) the latter is definitely the superior weapon, and a little less phallic. The hand-cannon is, by comparison, pretty vulgar and unnecessary for Light Gun games, and not particularly well-designed. Still, its fairly accurate, visceral and passable, just nothing special.
One major element with the Wii is the aftermarket accessories, go into any shop or onto any website and theres a huge selection of holders and skins for the Wiimotes, nunchucks and Wii balance board. But in my opinion, this is one of the most fun and realistic out there.
Now I don't mean realistic in terms of an ACTUAL gun, more in line with the original source to which this gun is licensed, The House Of The Dead. Segas classic arcade shooter which has spawned many sequels and spin offs.
Styled on the fictional "AMS Hand Cannon" (which itself is styled on a Magnum .44) the Hand Cannon is very well put together and can be used for any shooter game on the Wii.
Inserting the Wiimote is simple, a button on the side of the gun (just behind the tumbler which on a real weapon would revolve) pops the back open, folding down the nose the Wiimote slips into the slot with enough room at the base to plug in the nunchuck if its needed, the cable for the nunchuck can then be passed under this moving piece (resting in a small hole moulded into the piece) and pressed into a groove down the back of the handle. Once the Wiimote is in place the front can be flipped up and everything is secured for play time. Its all very neat, hiding the cable and plug for the nunchuck easily and quickly and can be set up in a matter of minutes.
Compared to the other 2 gun accessories my brother has this one is definatly the best, its also the biggest. Fitting the controller into it is simple and fast and its weight is just right in my opinion to make it feel good. It also looks the coolest (compared to the Waltheresque accessory he got free with the game and the "Zapper" copy he has that holds both Wiimote and nunchuck).
Though not essential this is great fun and if you like blasting zombies and mutants in the face, this helps bring you back to the full on arcade experiance as fast as you can say "lock and load!"
The official 'House of the Dead Overkill Hand Cannon' is an accessory for the Wii. This light gun is an outer casing that holds the Wii mote controller like a gun and allows you to wield it as such. You can then use the Hand Cannon to play games such as House of the Dead Overkill and Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles.
The gun will make it easier for you to aim and kill the undead. It features a soft hand grip for hours of comfortable shooting. The Wii mote is help firmly within the gun casing so it won't come loose even during the most furious of firefights, or when you're shaking the gun to reload.
The nunchuk can also be used with the hand cannon providing a provision for future games that may wish to utilise this feature.
The grips is weighted so that the Wii mote doesn't make the gun top heavy. The build quality is good and the crucially, the gun is accurate to shoot with. The bottom line is that this gun is the best available for Wii and it will greatly increase the fun you have with light gun games. A must own.
I'm a massive zombie fan! I'm a massive fan of the House of the Dead series. But am I a fan of the Overkill Hand Cannon? I'm not quite sure!
The positioning of the remote inside the cannon and the buttons you need to use frequently seem to conflict a lot with your actual hand position. Perhaps I'm just too fussy when it comes to hand cannons, but I personally feel more comfortable just either holding the remote itself in my hand, or using the Wii Zapper instead. The best feature of the Overkill Hand Cannon is how cool it actually looks.
In saying this, I often duel-wield the Wii Zapper and the Hand Cannon, as you feel like you're Duke Nukem! When doing so you can lose accuracy with the Overkill Hand Cannon, but it's a good experience just blasting the hell out of the undead who dare nibble your ear.
I recommend that before you buy this, you go into a gaming store when you're next in town and ask them to open it for you so you can try it out for yourself. If you think that sounds like a strange thing to do - don't, because gamers have asked stranger things in the past!
The House of the Dead : Overkill Hand Cannon is an essential purchase if you are a fan of the light-gun genre and an ideal accompaniment to the wii game of the same title. The gun itself is a replica of the hand cannon that is used in the latest instalment of the House of the Dead series.
The first thing I noticed about this light gun was the quality and the attention to detail that has been put into it. The Wii-mote fits nicely in to a compartment on the top of the controller and a flap locks it in position. With the Wii-mote inserted, it feels solid and suitably weighty, but do not worry, it will be not too heavy for most people (some people may need to use two hands after extended play time). There is a good level of accuracy obtained from this gun, and there is a bonus that you can use it for any other games that you like.
For home use, quite simply this is the best light - gun I have ever used.
The House of the Dead: Overkill Hand Cannon, in my opinion is the best Wii remote holder for a gun game around. I purchased this gun when I also bought the House of Dead: Overkill game. The reason I purchased the two together is because this is the official gun that accompanies the game, although the gun can be used on any other game.
The last time I had such a controller was with the original Nintendo console for a game that had you shooting birds, then a dog appears to pick up the birds. Because of the enjoyment of having the gun when playing the game, I decided to purchase the hand cannon, as I believed that the way to get the most out of this game was through such a controller. I was correct, because even though essentially the controller is just the Wii remote placed within the game shape, it engages you as a gamer more.
All the gun holder essentially does is hold the Wii remote within itself; with a trigger that is connected to the "B" button on the underside of the Wii remote. This is one of the reasons why I chose the Hand Cannon, as the way the trigger reacts, it is a trigger like feeling, instead of, from reviews that I have read, another button that you just press to fire; with the Hand Cannon you have to continuously press the button to fire.
The Hand Cannon itself feels like a well made product that gives you the feeling that it will last a very long time. The Hand Cannon has very snug fit when it is held within your hand, this is due to the good grip where you hold the gun. While one complaint of the gun is, while the design may look good, it is a plastic feeling, in a very bright white.
An additional reason why I purchased the Hand Cannon over other gun holders is the ability to attach the Wii Nunchuck to the Wii remote, as not all other gun designs have the ability to attach the two; House of the Dead: Overkill game does not need to have the Nunchuck attached. The way the Hand Cannon allows the two to be attached is at the top rear there is a hole to allow the lead of the Nunchuck to be fitted along the back of the place where you hold the gun, like a trench, so that it is hidden away so you don't feel the wire. Some of the complaints of the gun that I have read is that after a while the gun can feel heavy, but I can deny this is the case, as the gun feels extremely light weight when first picked up and this does not change no matter how long you play with it. One thing that did surprise me was the size of the Hand Cannon when you take it out of the box, as it is enormous, and because of this I thought it would be heavy and difficult to hold but this was not the case.
The question remains would I recommend this gun to a friend? The answer that I find myself give is yes I would. For the simple reason it is one of the best designs of a gun I have found so, as other guns that I have view and looked at purchasing looked like they are either too small or would break very easily. This is not the case with the Hand Cannon, as it is well built and very big; another good point is that the Hand Cannon is the same price as most other gun design, because of this you get the feeling that you are purchasing more for your money.
This light gun sleeve for your wii remote is the perfect partner for House of the Dead: Overkill and practically any other shooter you could think of.
It's pretty heavy compared to others on the market but it is well weighted, has a good shape and the soft hand grip does help to prevent hand fatigue. It's not small but then you wouldn't expect that from something called a hand cannon and it really feels good in the hand.
In fact the biggest selling point of this light gun is that it is big and heavy and has the feel of quality. It costs about £2 more than the average gun but it feels a lot more expensive than that.
The downside of the size and weight is that it may not be suitable for everyone. I have average sized hands for a woman and I wear a medium glove size but I think mine are about the smallest hands that could wield this gun comfortably. I think this is deliberate, after all it's designed to play a game meant for grown-ups only but I know plenty of grown-up zombie fans with smaller hands than me.
The Hand Cannon can be used with the nunchuck controller attached but attaching and de-attaching is rather fiddly.
On the whole I'd have to say that if you have the hands for it you shouldn't buy Overkill without the Hand Cannon.
The House of the Dead Hand Cannon offers you a better aim during your adventures in the dead infested house. With it's soft hand grip you can be shooting for hours and not feel any pressure of killing zombies. The Wii Remote tightly slots into the top of the Cannon and a plastic holder ensures that the Wii Remote doesn't come loose. The Wii Nunchuk is compatible with the Hand Cannon to ensure that you can even use your Zombie killer with future shoot'em'ups.
