Advantages: Gameplay
Disadvantages: Some finer graphical detailing
"Batman: Vengeance" is a video game released for the Gameboy Advance console in 2001 by Ubisoft. It is based on the popular "Batman" superhero and more specifically the animated television series. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.
Vengeance features Batman in a battle against the corrupt forces of Gotham City. The player will be met with three modes of play including standard platform play and battle-heavy scenes of driving and flying. In the platforming section of the title, the player will guide Batman on general tasks which including object gathering and moving from start to finish of the stage. Batman has access to a wide utility belt which can provide useful items including a grappling hook to navigate easily between large gaps. In the driving and flying sections, Robin will take control of the vehicles and this will allow Batman to eliminate the opposing criminals in higher speed action sequences. The game is generally easy to complete and does not offer much of a challenge to the player. Batman's cape is of particular use to the player as it gives him the ability to glide for short distances making longer jumps a breeze, so to speak.
The graphics of this title are presented from a side view perspective which allows a clear view of the area in play. Detailing is of an acceptable standard and featured typical characteristics of Batman's attire and some make-up effects on the Joker, but developers could have done more to present further detailing in the character sprites by use of deeper shades and perhaps a shadow effect. The audio is also of an acceptable title with the stages featuring atmospheric tunes that do not dominate play. The only noticeable musical score is while driving the Batmobile as it features a very loud composition to suit the faster gameplay.
Overall, Vengeance is a good addition to the Batman series of video games and would likely find success with those interested in superheroes. I would recommend this game to prospective buyers.
Summary: Thumbs up
