Advantages: Accurate to television series, Audio

Disadvantages: Gameplay, simple graphics

"BattleBots: Beyond the Battlebox" is a video game released for the Gameboy Advance console in 2003 by Sierra Entertainment. It is based on the popular television show of the same name. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.

Gameplay of this title stays accurate to the television series. The player must design and build a customized "BattleBot" and enter a tournament against similarly constructed objects. The intention is to destroy the opposing force so implementing various items of destruction including saws, spikes and other devastating features is essential. Unfortunately for the player, these items will inflict identical amounts of damage which seems unrealistic. Gameplay also exhibits one particular flaw in that each battle is incredibly easy. The player can simple lure an opponent towards a large circular saw which will damage the opponent irreparably and grant the victory to the player. There is no challenge in this game because of this feature. Of course, one can avoid this tactic and play a "fair fight" but it doesn't seem worthwhile when such an obvious fault was left untampered with.

The graphics are presented from an isometric view which allows a clear view of the battle arena. There is no obvious differentiation in between the arenas and this holds true to the television series. The bots are also of an average standard. I was able to differentiate clearly between the more popular bots but the graphics didn't particularly impress me. The audio, however, did with clear digital snippets of music and effects taken directly from the television series and implemented into play.

Overall, BattleBots is an average at best title which may entertain fans of the series. I would be hesitant about recommending it to prospective buyers outside of this market.
