Advantages: Donkey Kong is a good game

Disadvantages: Missing a stage, not too hard to loop

Donkey Kong is an arcade game where, as Mario, you negotiate platforms whilst dodging obstacles to save the damsel-in-distress Pauline. I guess it's not Super Mario, since, should he fall from a great height then he loses a life (actually, he's known as Jumpman here).

The NES version is not arcade perfect - it was missing one of the four stages (the cement factory level), but that's perhaps forgiveable given the console's limitations then. This NES version can actually be found in Animal Crossing for the GameCube, yet the N64 game Donkey Kong 64 features what must be a pretty accurate port of the arcade game. Then there's the Donkey Kong title for the old Game Boy, which, whilst not intended to come close to the real thing, offered a great deal beyond four stages. But for Nintendo to release the NES version for the GBA (and the Wii Virtual Console) is a disgraceful decision.

The stages are of a single screen. The hammer for picking up can be used to break the barrels and put out fires, with points also awarded by jumping over them. Bonus points for completing the stage quickly, but if you're not into points-scoring it would be difficult to recommend this game, and more so given that it's a stage short. And the differences between Game A and B are not that apparent. I like the game enough that I'd loop it a couple of times, but as I've already got Donkey Kong 64, I need not bother.

Summary: Classic NES Series: Donkey Kong for GBA
