"Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure" is a video game released to the Gameboy Advance console in 2002 by Universal Interactive. It is based on the popular series released in the mid 1990s for the Sony Playstation console. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.
In The Huge Adventure, Crash Bandicoot's nemesis Dr. Neo Cortex builds weapon which is capable of shrinking the Earth. This weapon was activated prior to Crash's knowledge of it and resulted in a severe scaling of all creatures. To counter these effects, Crash must gather purple crystals which are placed throughout the game's stages. The player has a sense of control in this title. Instead of playing in a specific pattern (level 1, level 2, level 3..) the player has the ability to choose from five stages before attempting to defeat a boss character. Defeating this character will transport Crash to the next set of five stages and this style of play repeats until Dr. Cortex's confrontation. In being a two dimensional platform game the difficulty is low, and I did not find myself particularly challenged by the gameplay. Crash will be given a new ability with each boss defeated, and these abilities will be required throughout the latter stages. An example of this includes a double jump which allows Crash a considerable jumping height.
The graphics of this title are presented from a side scrolling perspective which focuses on Crash Bandicoot. The detailing of Crash is particularly good when considering his popularity was seen on a more technologically advanced system; Crash retains his typical physical characteristics which include a protruding upper body against somewhat smaller legs. The environmental features are also good though come across as slightly repetitive in the early forested stages. There is little differentiation in the background scenes which can become a slight bore visually. The soundtrack is of an acceptable standard with numerous different compositions which follow the player throughout the game.
Overall, I would recommend The Huge Adventure to prospective buyers. Those who find enjoyment in platform genre releases would likely enjoy this title as it offers solid gameplay combined with acceptable visual and audible features.
Summary: Thumbs up
