Advantages: fun, offers a new game genre to play with your favorite Digimon

Disadvantages: no story, repetitive gameplay

Digimon Battle Spirit is a 2D fighting game where you play as various Digimon from the popular anime series such as Agumon, Gabumon or Renamon.

In terms of graphics the character sprites and animations are done well. The game is fast paced and stage designs are pretty basic but detailed and include various platforms for you to leap onto or from.

The object of the game is to beat down your opponent thus causing D-Spirit to fly out of them. Your object is to collect the most D-Spirits by beating up your opponent before time runs out. You can't freely digivolve however when Calumon appears on the screen, if you touch him, you'll transform to the ultimate or mega stage - so Agumon becomes Wargreymon for instance - giving you more destructive moves.

There's no real plot and controls are identical for everyone pretty much so you're just choosing your favorites really. Some might be slower than others but that's about it.

There are a few unlockable characters like Impmon or Lopmon but overall the game is repetitive and gets boring rather quickly. It offers a multiplayer mode however that's anoying considering you need a link cable and 2 copies of the game.

Digimon Battle Spirits is an interesting concept and you'll be addicted the first time you play however after a week or so you'll probably be sick of it with no desire to ever turn it back on.
Overall I'd say there hasn't been any truly perfect Digimon game. They all have elements that can be greatly improved upon yet never are. If you're sick of the RPGs, this fighter is a nice vacation but in the end, Bandai still has a long way to go before they ever release a Digimon game that won't frustrate or bore you to some degree.

Summary: Digimon Battle Spirit only supplies very short lived fun.
