Advantages: Gameplay
Disadvantages: Repetitive graphics
"Disney Sports: Snowboarding" is a video game released for the Gameboy Advance console in 2003 by Konami. It is a sports title featuring popular Walt Disney animated characters. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.
After the previous blunders seen in "Skateboarding", Walt Disney seemingly attempts to build bridges on its sport franchise by offering a Snowboarding release. It is a racing game which features popular Walt Disney animated characters including Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Similar to other snowboarding titles, the player's objective is to navigate down a large hill in the fastest possible time. There is also area for making use of jumps and performing various stunts which accumulate a series of points for successful maneuvers. Unlike Skateboarding, the point system does serve an obvious purpose and that is to unlock new snowboards which tweak the character's statistics. Each character features different attributes based on their physical appearance, such as a higher top speed or acceleration, and the use of these new snowboards applies an increase to certain areas. The game also features a head-to-head multiplayer mode through use of an optional game link cable.
The graphics are presented from a trailing view of the character. There is some appearance of three dimensional objects which do make for a pleasing visual experience but unfortunately this impacts on the available game stages. The player has access to a total of five courses which each appear very similar in their design. The stunt areas also become predictable in their placement as they are nearly identical across each stage. The sound is of a good standard with the sports series theme tunes being implemented well and more energetic scores being placed into gameplay.
Overall, I would recommend Snowboarding to prospective buyers. It is clearly intended for a younger audience due to the Disney franchising but is a simple enough game to grasp for all ages, and could serve as a good play for sports fans.
Summary: Thumbs up
