Advantages: Graphics

Disadvantages: Learning curve in gameplay

"Donkey Kong: King of Swing" is a video game released for the Gameboy Advance console in 2005 by Nintendo. It is based on the popular Donkey Kong franchise. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.

The gameplay of this title reflects both a platform and puzzle release. One may associate platforming with traditional left to right levels, but instead the player must work from the ground up by guiding Donkey Kong with assorted pegs, cannons and other swinging instruments. The levels are also filled with assorted enemies which either rest or fly near these pegs. The player must avoid these in aims of keeping Donkey Kong in the best of health; too many damaging hits will send the player back to the bottom of the stage to reattempt the level . The controls present a learning curve as the game is almost entirely played using the "L" and "R shoulder buttons which activate Donkey Kong's left and right arms respectively when reaching out to nearby pegs. The game is spread over 25 stages which also include boss fights, requiring Donkey Kong to land on the boss' head repeatedly while swinging from the pegs. The game does present some difficulty but it is more in the game's mechanics as opposed to actual enemy prowess.

The graphics are presented from a side view which focuses on Donkey Kong. The visuals are presented in a very cartoon like fashion which makes for pleasant viewing and breaks free from the traditional "DK Country" graphics. The movement between the pegs is well animated but does feature slightly repetitive movements. This could have allowed the developers to create seamless movement effects in sacrifice of the various idle taunts and gestures which former games were known for. The backgrounds are bright and colourful, and create a "jungle" atmosphere throughout each stage. The soundtrack is good and fans of the Donkey Kong series will recognize the remixed "Country" themes which are placed throughout each stage.

Overall, I would recommend King of Swing to prospective buyers as a puzzle release. There is certainly the element of methodical play which can captivate the attention of many, and is an enjoyable process throughout.

Summary: Thumbs up
