"Fire Pro Wrestling" is a video game released for the Gameboy Advance console in 2001 by Bam Entertainment. It is a sports based game with professional wrestling being represented. In the United States, the game received a rating of "T" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for teenage years and above due to its violent content.
Fire Pro Wrestling is one of the longest standing names in professional wrestling releases in Japan. It is heavily strategic in nature as opposed to being a traditional fighting game as stamina plays a crucial role to gameplay. Periods of heavy conflict will drain a wrestler of his energy and must be restored by pressing the "L" shoulder button to take a moment's rest. Taunts, activated by pressing the "select" button, will also grant the player in-game benefits. The game fuses an impressive roster of both popular American and Japanese wrestlers at the time, though they do not feature their native stage names. Representing "American Pro Wrestling" include Gigantic Joe ("The Big Show"), Kleebo ("Shawn Michaels") and Joe Morici ("The Rock"). The player also has access to the "American Wrestling Group" which includes Axe Duggan ("Hulk Hogan"), Karachi Kid ("Diamond Dallas Page") and Diefinger ("Goldberg"). Gameplay modes of this title are numerous and include standard exhibition matches with up to four wrestlers competing at once, tournament modes and cage matches including the deadly "electrified cage" match. It is something which would definitely appeal to fans of professional wrestling and could even connect with an external audience due to the lack of obvious franchise branding.
The graphics are presented from an isometric view which focuses on the in-ring action. Character detailing is superb and I was able to identify who characters were modeled after with no difficulty. Some characters, such as Anonymous M ("Kane") who sports green attire, did require some effort due to costume differences. Movement is fluid and shows no obvious slowdown or choppiness. The soundtrack is comparably good though slightly generic to a sports title with heavy rock tunes and the roar of the crowd which does include female screams when a wrestler draws blood.
Overall, I would recommend Fire Pro Wrestling to prospective buyers. It is a very in depth game which does away with supershow gimmicks in favour of solid, well constructed gameplay.
Summary: Thumbs up
