Advantages: Great for a quick game, funny animation and music, colourful graphics

Disadvantages: Not much good for a longer game, music drives you potty after a while!

Hot Potato is a mad little action puzzle game that should please almost any gamer – for a while at least. The premise is simple enough – you have a tray (or something – I bought the game for ?3 second=hand and had no manual with it) of hot potatoes, in 2 rows of 3. You can change the order of these, which is just as well – as you go along the road, you meet various other potatoes in your way – hit them with one of the same colour to get rid of it, but if you hit one with the wrong colour your it stays there and adds to your obstacles. Get held back too long and you lose a life.

That’s basically it! Well, not quite. There are 2 game modes, Mission and Score – in the latter you simply try to rack up as high a score as possible, while the Mission game is basically the same, however you have to obtain certain objectives to continue to the next level. (You need to get enough “Special Potatoes” etc for a mission.) Along the way you occasionally come across speed signs, and you can select one of these by staying on it long enough – the faster you go, the more points you score – but of course the more difficult the game is.

The game features bright graphics with some amusing animations, and a soundtrack that is quite, quite mad – unfortunately though there’s only one tune so it gets a bit monotonous after a while. The potatoes are quite funny and wave merrily in true street party style or blow raspberries at you. The game is quite challenging and there are quite a few options to play with if the urge takes you. For a quick game this is a very nice game and younger children will certainly enjoy the colourful graphics, funny animations, and whacky music even if they can’t work out how to play the game. An extended game however might well drive you up the wall…

There’s not much more to say really, for a quick blast it’s great, but it’s not much good for anything else. A welcome change from the endless stream of platformers and racing games though!

Summary: A fun game if taken in small doses.
