Advantages: Gameplay, Graphics

Disadvantages: Some generic sound effects

"Konami Krazy Racers" is a video game released for the Gameboy Advance console in 2001 by Konami. It is a racing game based on go-karts. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.

The gameplay of this title reflects a standard racing release. In it, players select from an assortment of characters from Konami's game series including "Castlevania", "Gradius" and "Metal Gear Solid". The objective of the game is complete Grand Prix style tournaments and achieving accolades by the way of trophies. While this may sound like an average racing title, Krazy Racers offers the player two distinct features. First, he or she must be able to complete time trial tournaments in between "cup" accomplishments in order to progress to the next series of races. Failure to complete a somewhat difficult course in the specified time will require the player to repeat the time trial until successful. The game also includes in game coins which are collected on the track. These coins are then exchanged for weapons, power-ups and other distinctions rather than being awarded them at random during the race. There is a strong element of strategic thinking because of this. Krazy Racers also features a multiplayer mode by the use of an optional game link cable.

The graphics are presented from a trailing view of the player's vehicle. Each course is visually stunning with each track being based on a popular Konami franchise, for example a warehouse complete with boxes and crates for Metal Gear Solid. The animations are smooth with no obvious signs of choppiness or slowing down. The characters are also very well designed and each bear resemblance to their intended identity. The soundtrack is also good with musical scores being remastered and compressed directly from the assorted video games which the courses represent. The sound effects are standard as far as racing games go with engine noises and tyre screeches throughout gameplay.

Overall, I would recommend Krazy Racers to prospective buyers. It is a good offering of solid gameplay combined with excellent visuals.
