"Mario Golf: Advance Tour" is a video game released for the Gameboy Advance console in 2004 by Nintendo. It is a sports game with golf being represented. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.
The players of this title assume the role of either Neil or Ella. They are spending a holiday at the Mario Country Club and entering golf competitions with fellow travelers. Wining these competitions rewards the player with experience points that can be applied to the character's statistics to improve their strength, accuracy and other areas. Successful competition play also unlocks an assortment of Super Mario characters which can be used in exhibition matches outside of the main story mode. The exhibition mode features typical golf match settings including match, stroke and doubles games and features five selectable Super Mario characters prior to unlocking further names in the story mode. There is some learning curve by the way of adjusting to the method in which the player hits the ball. I found the "three click" system to be somewhat troublesome due to my unfamiliarity with it, but the system has been featured throughout most golf video games to date so should present no challenge to more seasoned virtual golfers.
The graphics are presented from a trailing view of the golfer which changes to to a top down perspective while putting. The visuals are excellent and feature three dimensional characters and an assortment of course settings. The courses, however, can be repetitive in visual design due to their outdoors and overall green locations. To compensate, a variety of special effects were included when making a perfect swing. Rays of gold and yellow spring from the ball after the swing connects and fill the display in its entirety. The soundtrack is also of a good standard with upbeat and lively musical scores and some digital voice snippets which compliment areas of expertise shown by the player.
Overall, Advance Tour is an excellent golf game which I would recommend to prospective buyers. It offers solid gameplay and is backed by great visuals and audio.
Summary: Thumbs up
