"Mario Party Advance" is a video game released for the Gameboy Advance console in 2005 by Nintendo. It is based on the popular "Mario Party" series of video games. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.
Mario Party features popular characters from the "Super Mario Brothers" series and pits them against each other in a board game. The player assumes the role of a chosen character and competes against up to three other computer or physical opponents. Mario Party mainly saw success as a release for the Nintendo 64 and has since been remastered for numerous platforms including the Gameboy Advance. The objective is to collect stars by exchanging in-game coins for them or by winning mini games which occur in between a complete cycle turns. Mario Party Advance features over 100 mini games which is a significant boost over the 50 mini games seen in earlier titles. Each require the player to complete a different task, including climbing and jumping. The games are easy to complete with tutorials being presented prior to play which outline the buttons required to be used and their specific function. Multiplayer connectivity allows four players to engage with the game by use of an optional game link cable.
The graphics are presented from an overhead view which focuses on the game board. As per the series, images are bright, vibrant and feature a variety of warmer colours. This perspective may change to a side view depending on the mini game but images do not lose their lustre. Each of the characters are well drawn and bear resemblance to their intended identity. The soundtrack is also of a good standard and features Mario theme tunes heard in earlier Super Mario video games and environmental accents such as a die roll and movement effects.
Overall, Mario Party Advance captures the feel of technologically superior Nintendo 64 titles well and offers an entertaining gaming experience. I would recommend this title to prospective buyers.
Summary: Thumbs up
