Advantages: Better graphics, Double battles, loads of improvements to the interface, previously on Pokemon

Disadvantages: No new storyline.

Pokemon Fire Red is a remake of the classic Pokemon series for the Gameboy Advance.

The games story has you start out as a young trainer in Pallet Town and are given a Pokemon by Professor Oak, your goal is to travel the world of Kanto and catch all 150 of the worlds Pokemon as well as battle and collect all the badges from the Gym leaders and eventually challenge the Elite Four themselves. Along the way it won't be an easy journey as you will encounter the evil Team Rocket who will attempt to get in your way!

The gameplay in Pokemon Fire Red has been brought up to speed with the more recent Pokemon titles like Ruby, for instance your character can now be a boy or a girl and now moves at a much faster pace thanks to the running shoes you get in the game. Your bag has been now properly organised pockets for your items, key items and Pokeballs instead of just being a gigantic list. When in battle you will now see an experience bar below your Pokemon that shows you how close it is to levelling up. Items in the world you can interact with are far more obvious as now you can select them and choose the action instead of going through the menus to select the option you want.

There is also a really cool feature that when you turn back on the game you will get a little previously on Pokemon and you will see what you were up to last time you played, so if it's been a while you it will help to jog your memory and prevent you from being at a loss of what to do.

The battle system has been updated to include the double battles found in Ruby and Sapphire. The battles are the same as ever apart from that with each of your Pokemon able to do four moves and gain experience by fighting, and at a certain level of experience they may even evolve!

Catching Pokemon is simple, you can only capture the wild Pokemon in the game though. When battling a wild Pokemon you must weaken it and preferably send it to sleep then send out your Pokeball, Great Ball or Ultra ball and see if you can catch it! With 150 to get it is a really addictive experience trying to get them all.

Graphics have been fully updated to Ruby and Sapphire standards and the world of Kanto is much more colourful and full of detail. Pokemon animations are better an the models used have been much updated from the original Pokemon Red.

This is an excellent update to the classic Pokemon Red though if you have played it already you will already be familiar with the events and story and it may not be as exciting as your playthrough of Red.

Summary: A good role playing game.

It was nice to finally return to Kanto but at the same time its annoying to have to go to events to unlock some areas and pokemon.
