This review is for Pokemon Emerald, it's like a best of of the Pokemon Ruby and the Pokemon Sapphire games.
Introduction
Pokemon Emerald was bought out in the UK in 2005 for the Game Boy Advance (GBA). As with all Game Boy games you can use them on new platforms that are released, for example:
A GBA game works in a Nintendo DS and DS lite
A Gameboy Color game works in a GBA, a Nintendo DS and DS lite
A Gameboy game works in a Gameboy Color, a GBA, a Nintendo DS and DS lite
Very handy to know as Nintendo don't tend to make many of the classic games for their newer platforms.
I bought my copy of Pokemon Emerald second-hand from Game in 2006 and it cost me around Ł25, sounds a lot I know as it was only Ł30 new but this really was the going rate at the time as the game is fairly rare.
Pokemon Emerald is very similar to Ruby or Sapphire, it basically has a few added tweaks but overall the same game. So if you already Ruby or Sapphire this should only be top of your wish list if you have an extra GBA to link it with your Emerald version in the interests of completing the game.
I found the colour and graphics as good as you would expect from a GBA, you are able to set text speed at the beginning of the game which is useful.
The Story
Both team Aqua and team Magma are trying to realise their dreams of expanding the sea and the land, by awakening the two 'super-ancient pokemon'- Kyogre and Groudon. And as with games before, the consequences are dire. Your mission is to locate the third ancient pokemon- Rayquaza. As a trainer destined to become the champion, saving the world on the way is a simple task, yes?
The Game
You begin by meeting Professor Birch and choosing your name and gender.
You are a young adventurer just moved to the area with the dream of becoming Pokemon grand champion - you are given you're first Pokemon but from then on you are able to catch more and build up your team until you are unstoppable.
You build your team of pokemon up by catching them in Pokeballs, Great Balls, Master Balls and a selection of special addition balls such as dive and net balls.
You make your pokemon stronger by 'levelling them up', this is done by battling wild pokemon which can be found in long grass, caves, rivers and lakes(as well as a few other places) or by battling other pokemon trainers. The more battles you win the stronger your Pokemon will become - as they 'level up' they also learn new attacks and sometimes even evolve (kind of like growing up into a bigger, stronger Pokemon).
The ultimate aim of the game is to collect all of the pokemon listed in the pokedex, this can be done by catching pokemon and trading them with friends who have other versions of the Pokemon game such as Pokemon Ruby....but there are other aims, sub plots if you like during the game.
Aim 1
Become the Pokemon Champion. To do this you must defeat 8 Gym leaders and the Elite four as well as the reigning champion.
The gym leaders are: Roxanne, Brawly, Wattson, Flannery, Norman (your dad), Winona, Liza and Tate(the twins) and Juan. They each use a different type of pokemon for their balltes but to tell you that would be to spoil your fun!
The Elite four can only be battled once you have defeated all of the gym leaders and collected all of the HM (hidden machine) moves for your pokemon. The elite four and the reigning champion must be fought in succession and you will not be given the opportunity to take your pokemon to the medical centre between battles.
Aim 2
As mentioned earlier, find Rayquaza, a legendary pokemon who must be awakened to undo the damage that team Aqua and team Magma are causing in their bid to make over the world.
Aim 3
Solve all of the Trick Masters trick rooms and find the 3 'regi's'. The regi's are three more legendary pokemon and you can only go about finding them after you've made your way through all of the trick masters trick rooms and followed a number of braille instructions. My advice here is to read a walkthrough very carefully, it's a very long complicated process.
Aim 4
Collect all the badges at the Battle Frountier, I've not done this yet but I will update my review when I do.
Further information
The best information for this game that I have found are on the Gamefaqs dot com website. The site includes information such as:
Walkthroughs
Complete FAQs on pokemon abilities, stats, catch rates and techniques
Complete FAQs on berries
Detailed maps of the Hoenn world and all the caves, islands and hidden areas
Pokemon type and breeding charts
Guides to all the major opponents and gym leaders
I really would recommend spending some time reading through at least one of the walkthroughs before you begin your game as I discarded an item early on in my quest without realising that it was essential to get a particular pokemon!
In Summary
This game is incredibly long and I've not yet come to the end of it. I play it when on long train journeys which kills a lot of time, therefore saving me money on my paperback book buying addiction which in turn, at Ł25 makes it very good value for money!!
Summary: Once you've started you'll never stop!
