Advantages: Gameplay
Disadvantages: Some graphics, Some audio
"Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" is a video game released for the Gameboy Advance console in 2003 by Ubisoft. It is an adventure game based on the "Prince of Persia" series. In the United States, the game received a rating of "T" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for teenage years and above due to its violent content.
In this title, the player assumes the role of a Prince across the ancient middle east; specifically what is now known as Iran. The Prince discovers a dagger known as "The Dagger of Time" which unleashes a power which brings the Sultan's kingdom to rubble. The Prince is captured by the Sultan's army and must escape a more isolated palace through a series of platform based stages. He remains equipped with the enchanted dagger and this comes into play when dealing with the plethora of enemies which the game offers. The Dagger has the ability to reverse time for a few moments, putting the player at a previous point in the game. This serves as an interesting implement as it is used to solve some some switch related puzzles that are featured in the game. It is somewhat difficult as the game requires the player to repeatedly strike enemies to eliminate them and some do require what many may deem to be "excessive" in terms of the amount of hits required.
The graphics are presented from a side scrolling perspective which focuses on the Prince. Due to the game's setting of being in the confines of a palace, the background scenes are highly repetitive but are otherwise a pleasure to look at. The walls are well detailed and accented by various features such as curtains and drawings. The character detailing is simple and appear to be generic images as opposed to something that truly reflects a "Prince from Persia". The animations are swift and smooth which offsets the generic character sprite but the Prince's lack of finer details is quite evident. The soundtrack is comparably simple with Arabian style musical scores and sound effects following the player throughout.
Overall, The Sands of Time is a good platforming adventure game which I would recommend to prospective buyers. While it may not score well in the visual department, it does remain an enjoyable play due to the use of the Dagger and its somewhat longer lasting enemies.
Summary: Thumbs up
