Advantages: Gameplay, Graphics
Disadvantages: May be seen as too easy
"Spyro: Season of Ice" is a video game released for the Gameboy Advance console in 2001 by Sierra Entertainment. It is based on the "Spyro The Dragon" series of video games. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.
The storyline of this title follows that which is typically seen in other Spyro video games. In it, Grendor and his assembly of "Rhynoc" soldiers have imprisoned all the fairies of the Dragon Realm. It is up to Spyro to rescue these imprisoned fairies while collecting the abundance of hidden treasure which lies throughout the game. The game is spread over 20 stages where 100 fairies and 7,000 hidden treasures are awaiting discovery which supplies the player with ample features to engage with. Spyro may also speak with local villagers who provide him with sub-missions to the overall intention of search and rescue, and this too enhances the experience by providing further tasks to accomplish. The game itself, however, is quite repetitive. Each stage features the same requirements and can become a bore in a short period of time. I did not find this to be the case personally.
The graphics of this title change perspective depending on the level in play. The camera view can change from a trailing view of Spyro to a top down perspective rather frequently and both present advantages and disadvantages. I personally prefer the top down view levels as this allows a clear view of the stage in play and allows easier identification of treasures and fairies who await rescue. Overall, the images are excellent and bear resemblance to their more powerful Playstation counterparts. Each of the levels are very cartoon like in their design and well detailed buildings and plant life. The audio is comparably good with more gentle musical scores and effects following the player throughout.
Overall, Season of Ice is a game which I would recommend to prospective buyers. It offers little challenge so could be more suited for a younger marketplace, but the vast amount of available tasks would likely keep a player of any age occupied.
Summary: Thumbs up
