Advantages: Multiple characters, new way to defeat enemies
Disadvantages: Quite different from other Mario titles
Super Mario Advance is a platforming adventure for the Gameboy Advance.
The games story is very basic as with the other Mario games, there is an evil Toad called Wart who is terrorizing the land of dreams which may or may not be real and Mario and his friends must journey through the world and defeat the giant toad king! Ah well, at least Peach doesn't need rescuing in this one!
The gameplay is actually quite different to the other classic Mario titles, for a start you can now pick the character you want to play as before entering a level. You can pick from Mario who is the all round guy with good strength and speed and jumps well, Toad who is very fast and strong but his jump is the weakest, Luigi who has less power but can jump very high and Princess Peach who has low power and speed but can float when she jumps.
In the game world the play has changed considerably as well, jumping on the head of enemies wont kill them! You must pick them up and throw them at other enemies or use the vegetable pick ups to defeat the enemies in the game. The health system is also different as it is possible to increase your health past the standard 2 hits you get with Super Mario in the past games, you can go to an alternate dimension and pick up potions which give you another heart which makes the game easier.
Other than that it is similar to other Mario titles, you will have to complete skillfull jumps while avoiding pit falls and obstacles that get in your way. The game also includes the classic Mario Brothers too which has Mario clean up the sewers, it does get really challenging though!
Graphics are good, colourful and vibrant making good use of the Gameboy Advance hardware.
If you want a good platforming adventure for your Gameboy Advance, try Super Mario Advance out!
Summary: A good Mario title.
