Advantages: First DragonBall Z game on GBA, First DragonBall Z RPG, Leveling Up
Disadvantages: Difficult at times
This is a review on the game DragonBall Z The Legacy Of Goku for the gameboy advance. This is the first time review on a Gameboy advance game, so I hope that this review will be helpful to you.
This game is one player, it is quite different to the other DragonBall Z games, and it is not a fighting game as such. This DragonBall Z game is an RPG game. You go around as Goku, and able to fight with your fists, and fire energy balls at the enemy. The game revolves around the first few sagas from the DragonBall Z series.
You will be fighting in the Saiyan Saga, Namek Saga, and Freeza Saga. These sagas will have their own storyline, which will be based on the TV series. When you start the game, you will be able to wander around like you would on a Final Fantasy game.
Here are the controls, so if you play the game, you will know how to play it straight off.
A = Punch
B = Energy Ball
R = Fly / Swim
Start = Pause
Start and Select = Back to menu
Those are the basic controls you will need to know when you are in battle on this game, just thought I might point them out to you.
At the beginning of the game, the first story is Goku’s son Gohan has been taken by an evil saiyan called Raditz (if you wish to know what saiyan’s are, check out my DragonBall Z Trading Cards review). Goku will have to travel the woodland that surrounds his house to follow Raditz’s power level.
Now your story has begun, you will be able to train up by fighting wolves and snakes, each enemy you kill will give you experience. The more experience you get, the higher your level goes. It is quite hard at start, so it is best to level up as much as you can before you go and find Raditz, as there are some mini bosses you have to face first like a giant dinosaur creature, which is very hard to defeat when you are at a low level.
Every time you get a level up, your health points go up, your magic points go up, and so does your attack and defence. The higher your level, the harder it will be to level up, as you will need to get more experience to gain your level up.
If you are low on health, there should be a senzu bean in your items section in the pause menu. A senzu bean is like a health potion, you take that and your health will be fully healed, and so will your power. You will only have one senzu bean in your pocket at first, but you will be able to find more on the ground when you are on your journey.
I won’t tell you anymore about the storyline as then I will be telling too much about the game and spoiling it for those who might want to buy this game after reading this review.
You can only be Goku in this game, not like this games sequel, which when you play it, you can be more then one character which is very good. This game is good also, with the whole level ups, and pushing yourself to the limit.
That’s what the game is pretty much, and kick butt RPG, that has never been done for the DragonBall Z gaming series.
The game is very playable, it has many things you can do, even if you don’t know where to go, there is always some action out there waiting for you, everywhere, anywhere, there might well be a monster waiting to kill you, but you will probably win and take the experience.
The game is enjoyable, the storyline is great, it’s all based on the TV series, so if you have seen the TV series, then you will certainly like this game. If not, then you still will probably like this game, if you like RPG’s that is, if not then I don’t recommend this game to you.
It is addictive, when you start the game, and you get to some action, you will want to keep playing, to see how the story will unravel and wanting to level up your character more and more and more.
The graphics are good, it is not outstanding graphics as it is for the Gameboy advance, it is only 32bit, and so if you are looking for something with outstanding graphics, then I recommend that you don’t even does anything with the Gameboy advance. For what the game is, I would say it has got very good graphics.
The background music to the game is awesome, from the original series, and also some that they have made up, makes the game much better when there is music involved.
The sound effects to the game is good also, you have all the punching noises, the groaning of the monsters in the woodland, it makes the game much better then it would be with no sound effects at all.
There are no voices in this game, it is all done in typing form, you will see a picture of the person who is talking, then beside it there will be the message that he / she is saying.
The game can be very difficult if you are not at a decent level, then you will die quite quickly, that’s what makes the game longer, as you will need to spend time killing wolves and snakes to gain your experience to defeat the tougher bosses.
The game is around £5 - £20 now, depending if its pre-owned or not, is depending on how much it costs. It is really good value, as this game is really great fun, and will keep you entertained for ages.
I really like this game, it is the first DragonBall Z game to be an RPG, and I really like how they have made the game so good. I give this game 3 star * * *, because it is not as good as its sequel, yet it is very good game still.
Thanks For Reading!

- 18/04/05 I might be wrong but I think there was a Dragonball/DBZ RPG on the NES. Not that you could buy it anywhere now though...
