"Top Gear Rally" is a video game released for the Gameboy Advance console in 2003 by Kemco. It is a racing game based on offroad settings. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.

The gameplay of this title reflects a standard racing release. The title's primary gameplay mode is the "Championship" mode where players race against computer opponents in aims of winning three unique "championship cups". It is unfortunate to note that the same 30 race courses are used in each of the championship cups, so gameplay can appear to be very repetitive. The races are made interesting by the random insertion of traffic cones, obstacles and other hazards. Throughout each championship cup I did not feel I experienced the same race twice as I was constantly looking for any new hazards that may impact on my performance. The game also has a very realistic feel to it as areas of more moist dirt or mud causes vehicles to slide in comparison to more solid ground. The computer intelligence is average and is able to respond appropriately to obstacles which provides the player a sufficient challenge. Other modes included are "quick race", "time trial" and a "versus" mode which enables a second player to compete head-to-head by use of an optional game link cable.

The graphics are presented from a trailing view of the player's vehicle. The images are rendered in a fully three dimensional environment which allows for excellent visuals. One aspect of many racing games is its limited view on the areas ahead. On these games I find it difficult to see where an upcoming turn may lie but Top Gear Rally simplifies the process by having a very long field of view. The track's twists and turns are presented well in advance and allows the player to prepare for any sharp turns. Environmental features are quite varied to include densely forested woods to arctic banks filled with snow. The soundtrack is standard to many racing releases and features a typical engine revving sound to denote acceleration.

Overall, Top Gear Rally is perhaps one of my preferred racing video games and I would recommend it to prospective buyers. It is an excellent combination of good gameplay and stunning, easy to see visuals which makes the ride a joyous one.

Summary: Thumbs up
