Advantages: Graphics, Gameplay
Disadvantages: N/A
"Alfred's Adventure" is perhaps one of the most quirky, odd and fun games I have played on the Gameboy console. It is also one of the most graphically detailed and well animated games, too.
Players of this game control a red chicken named "Alfred". The controls of this game immediately confused me slightly as I was not sure how to deal with the variety of whimsical enemies, such as the wind up mouse. Both the "A" and "B" button force Alfred to jump which is unusual for a "platform" genre game as usually there is one unique button set to repel enemies. Alfred's attack is the "dive bomb" performed by jumping and pressing the down arrow to send him spiraling into an enemy. The overall objective of this game is to guide the chicken through various puzzles while collecting balloons. There are a set number of balloons per mission, and once Alfred has retrieved all of these the game will automatically progress into the next mission. The gameplay is simple but very engaging.
The graphics on this game are fantastic, showing extreme precision and care during creation. Icarus Productions, one of the vendors of this title, titles this "HiColour Technology". I found nothing wrong whatsoever graphically throughout my playtime. There are numerous areas of 3D on this title, particularly in the introduction and credits, but the game itself is presented in typical Gameboy 2D. Nonetheless, the colours throughout are bright and vibrant; making full use of the "Color" aspect of Gameboy Color.
The sound is also of high quality. Like most Gameboy titles, the music was repetitive but did not come across as an annoyance. Rather, due to the peculiar game overall, the songs and sound effects provided very well to my gameplay experience.
If I had to create a list of "Top 10" Gameboy titles, Alfred's Adventure would likely be very high on the ranking. I would highly recommend this game to any audience of any age. It is also suitable for foreign language speakers as the game offers the player a language option to translate the story into his or her native tongue.
Summary: A flawless Gameboy title
