Advantages: Traditional gameplay
Disadvantages: Graphics
"Backgammon" takes the popular table game of the same name and brings it to the Gameboy Color console with minimal success. This title does not incorporate any variation on the traditional rules so those familiar with the game would be able to play this with ease.
Players will engage in a tournament against opponents of varying difficulty. Before each game there will be a message from the player's opponent regarding their skill level. These are very clear and well implemented graphically. The board itself, though, features very poor graphics. It is easy to distinguish between the spaces and pieces but additional effort could have clearly been given to the title, for example the checkers do not appear very rounded but rather come across as "blocky".
There is not much to review by the way of audio in this game. The same, overly repetitive song follows the player through each stage in the tournament and does not seem to match the more strategic atmosphere that a typical game of backgammon would carry; It is rather quick paced and happy-go-lucky in a way. Sound effects are also minimal with a brief tone to suggest the rolling of the dice.
This is likely a game geared solely to players who enjoy Backgammon. There are clear prompts when a player makes an illegal move, but it is somewhat assumed that the player would know the rules of gameplay prior to engaging with the title. I would not think that one could learn the rules through playing this title. Replay value would be solely up to the player and his or her personal preference towards this game overall.
Summary: For those familiar with the rules of Backgammon only

- 27/01/09 What are the controls like on the GBA? I love this game on 42 all time classics on the DS and it is easy to drag the pieces using the stylus but I dont think I'd like to pay for a cartrige with only this game on it. |

- 25/01/09 I enjoy backgammon but am one of those annoying people who have to keep asking my opponents 'can I do this?' or 'how many can jump'! |
