Advantages: Well animated graphics
Disadvantages: Lack of audio cues
"Batman: Chaos in Gotham" is based on the television series of a similar name. In it, the player guides the original Bruce Wayne Batman through the streets of Gotham in attempts to deal with a recent breakout of evil henchmen from the local asylum. Batman notices something wrong when discovering snow and ice during the summer season and begins his quest to reveal the mystery behind it.
Like similar Batman titles for the Gameboy console, "Chaos in Gotham" is a side scrolling adventure game. There is also elements of platform gameplay as Batman will find himself frequently jumping, climbing barricades and using floating clouds of ice to transport himself towards the end of the stage. Gameplay revolves heavily around fighting and eliminating the various henchmen which have freed themselves from imprisonment. Controls are common to the genre but do feature somewhat of a reversal to other Batman titles; Arrows control movement, "A" makes use of the attack function and "B" causes Batman to jump.
The graphics for this title are bright and appropriately coloured. I also found the various animations, such as Batman's attack, to be very smooth and "flowing" in a way. Batman's cape also reacts to the characters movement, for example during the fall of a jump it will blow upwards as if there was wind catching it below. The detailing was slightly poor but I could distinguish clearly between the various enemies and hazards.
There is nothing particularly memorable about the audio in this game. One flaw I found about this section is that there are no audio cues as to when Batman is being attacked; The player could demise silently and be none the wiser. There is a slight "pow" noise with each strike made against an opponent but nothing similar to reflect damage that Batman incurs.
I somewhat enjoy this title and would be able to consider recommending it for purchase. There is some challenge to be met in this game and it does provide minor amusement for fans of the "Batman" series. Replay value, however, could be minimal.
Summary: Acceptable
